This was the year of the centenary of the famous day on which James Joyce set the wanderings of Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom in Dublin and thousands of Joyce fans visited the capital from all over the world to enjoy the atmosphere.It was a busy year for Joyce fans and you can see some of the details on www.rejoycedublin2004.com.
It has snowed in Dublin today and for Christmas I am quoting here the very last lines from one of Joyce`s short stories "The Dead": Snow was general all over Ireland.It was falling on every part of the dark central plain,on the treeless hills,falling softly upon the Bog of Allen and,further westward,softly falling into the dark mutinous Shannon waters.It was falling too on every part of the lonely churchyard on the hill where Michael Furey lay buried.It lay thickly drifted on the crooked crosses and headstones,on the spears of the little gate,on the barren thorns.His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling,like the descent of their last end,upon all the living and the dead.

"The Dead", IMHO, is one of the most perfect short stories and those last lines always make me shiver.

Aye, The Dead is one of my favorites, too! Was thrilled that John Huston's last film he was able to bring this Joyce classic to life!

I have my Ulysses, I have my James Joyce's Ulysses by Stuart Gilbert but haven't read them. Wonder if I can get them read in the next 2 days before I go back to work?
