UK Train Schedule???

Can someone give me a site to review train schedules in UK. Trying to find out times to and from York to and from Manchester Airport. Also, I am told that many of the trains do not run on Christmas Day and on Boxing Day the following day. Is this correct? What is Boxing Day?
I am trying to get from York to Manchester Airport on 27th or 28th of Dec. Thanks for the help!

Hi Mate,

The German Railway site is a good one for all over the world.

Boxing Day is the day after Xmas. It has nothing to do with pugilism.

Boxing day is december 26th, in many European countries, this day as a holyday.

You will find British train timetables at: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/. Just click on the "planning your journey" button. It will be self-explanatory from there on.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your journey.

Phil.

Try www.Trainline.co.uk for journey destinations and times.
There are some train strikes in London (- mainly the heathrow express I think) around Christmas, so watch out for that.
I hope that you're not on your own over Christmas?

Firstmate......Regarding Boxing Day....in the good olde days when England was a land of wealthy land owners,Lords and Ladies, the servants were required to work on Christmas Day.In return for making it a celebration fit for a king, they were given the next day off so as to celebrate a bit themselves. They would line up early on Dec 26 and the Lord of the Land would give each one a gift box conatining a gift, money, the like. There are many explanations for Boxing Day and I'm sure you'll hear more.Happy Holidaze!!........S

Thanks for the info. and the history lesson re: Boxing Day.
Question: MRS MR. Should I anticipate problems getting from York-Kings Crossing to LHR Heathrow airport? Would not be on Christmas or Boxing Day. I assume if all else fails I can take a taxi from there to LHR.

If you end up at Kings Cross station, it might be cheaper for you to take your taxi over to Paddington Station where you can get the Heathrow Express train to LHR. Unless you are in a group of several people, then a taxi all the way to LHR might be a bit less but still at the whims of traffic which the Paddington Express would not be.

If you're at Kings Cross, just take the tube. It's 50 minutes to LHR, and direct. Generally reliable, and strike-free

Most of the daytime, a cab could take as long (longer from 1500-1900), and getting a cab to Paddington, then walking to the Heathrow Express, would save you little more than 10-15 minutes.

The only day the tube's not running is Christmas Day, though start times are late on Boxing Day, and frequencies are reduced for much of the Dec 24-Jan 1 period.

See www.tfl.gov.uk then press the Seasonal button
