@flanner - you should not assume that the country in which people live is the (only) country of their citizenship. I am a dual UK and US national. I believe gertie is also a UK national. I entirely agree with you that the UK is left of the US - and your assumption that I support "anti-poor orthodoxies" has no basis whatsoever.

Also, your definition of fascist seems entirely off base. There are several adjectives that might apply to criticizing the election results in another country (never happened over US elections, of course) but fascist is not one of them.

To flanneru anyone who is a step left on him is a fascist! Anyone to the right a reactionary!

BTW a gated estate is a large house surrounded by a fence with a gate to get in that can be locked - a secure gate - not a gated community which is a whole different thing.

My (1964) OED defines Fascism as: "The principles & organization of the patriotic & anti-communist movement in Italy started during the 1914-18 war culminating in the dictatorship of Benito Mussolini ... & imitated by Fascist or blackshirt associations in other countries."

If all it takes is patriotism and anti-communism...
