First Class however, on mainline trains, is amongst the very best in Europe - ironically whilst second or standard class is amongst the most uncomfortable, etc. in Europe - to me symbolizing the great class gulf i perceive in Britain

and a unique British second class train thing is seats that fall down occasionally when you plop in them - this has happened to me several times so now i always check to see if the seat is attached before putting my big arse in it

Door openings on older trains can also perplex foreigners as doors at times can only be open by putting your hand outside the door window and opening it from the outside - another novelty in europe for me and i guess to prevent accidental openings

Josser: " . . . . it's possible to suss out one of his headings at a glance and it begins to get boring.
He trolls through online British newspapers . . . . . "

I once accused PQ of just such a thing and he was VERY hurt. "Who, moi - I NEVER copy anything!!"

(And he still hasn't explained how he saw Loch Ness from the train?!? )

jj - hurt is not the word - offended because after being a professional travel writer for decades i was being accused by you of plagiarizing and just copying and pasting everything.

and writing a post that incorporates quotes from the article with my own thoughts is not copying and pasting.

Loch Ness from the train - well i saw some lake just before Inverness and thought it were Lake Ness - i was wrong - have you ever made a mistake on Fodor's

like the other day when you told someone doing excursions around England that no railpass would be worth it - and then i take the CHEAPEST fares on nationalrail.co.uk and even the cheapest fares cost much more than the railpass. We all make mistakes - mixing up Loch Ness makes me look foolish but telling someone with seeming assurance that no railpass will help is a big big mistake IMO - don't talk of which you don't know - and yes i have been guilt of that too many times.

I just wish we had such poor trains here in California. I really like British trains, even the bad ones.

Yes being considered by many as one of the worst in European does not mean they are not much much better than anything America offers

The British system runs an incredible number of trains and passengers - just since Thatcher days the money for the infrastructure seems not to have kept up with the surging riderships - esp on commuter and regional trains it seems IME

Saying I think no rail pass would really pay w/ their specific plans/itinerary is my opinion - and still is. Not a mistake/right/wrong - an opinion.

Describing the gorgeous view of Loch Ness from the train is something else altogether. You might catch a glimpse of the Moray Firth approaching Inverness - but it could hardly be confused for Loch Ness.

Drink less paint. Then you won't fall out of your seat.

CW - who has never fallen out of a train seat. Not even after a few sherries.

You should have brought your own before you boarded.

Incidentally paint is not covered by Boris' booze ban - so you'll be alright.

It has to be said there's a class of petty vandals who seem to like dislodging the seat-pads, or rushed/incompetent cleaners who can't slot them back securely.

That's in my role as Her Majesty's Pubfinder Persuivant.

I take my responsibilities seriously.
