Typical payment method for rental cottage?

Don’t do it.
Just not worth it …..so many horror stories. We have so many reputable agencies in Scotland, who accept CC, offer high levels of service and you have recourse if things go wrong.
There are so many ways in Europe that private individuals can easily and cheaply accept credit card payments for commercial transactions.

I agree, do not make a payment by bank transfer. Despite what has been said above, it is not normal practice here in the UK to pay for accommodation by bank transfer. I would only ever pay by credit card and, even then, I probably wouldn't deal with an individual property owner but with a reputable agency.

Is it a reputable cottage rental? What do we know about it? If they are just new to renting out their cottage then it would be different to if this is the way that they've been doing it for decades with hundreds of positive reviews. Some folk on here may have even stayed with them and can help with your confidence with dealing with them????
