Thank you to all for your thoughtful replies. I have reviewed your comments and any links to TR's etc.
What do you think of the following?:
4 days based in Verona (will be there for the last day of the opera of the season; day trip to Lake Garda)
4 days based in Bologna (day trip(s) to Ravenna, Parma and/or Ferrera?)
5 days based in Venice (day trip(s) to Padua and/or Vicenza?)
Too many/few days in one spot? I believe all do-able via train? While I love the idea of visiting the Como and/or Alba area, it seems our time does not easily permit visiting those places.

I like this plan and the amount of time in each place. I think it is doable by train easily.
We spent 4-5 days in Verona and only did a day trip to Vicenza from there. I thought Verona very charming. You can skip past the ROmeo and Juliet schtick if you want. Although we went one am early to the house and it was sort of fun. Not sure if it's closer to Vicenzo from Verona or Venice.
Should be a great trip!

Like your last one very much. I don't think you have too much time in one place if you're going to day trip.
We stayed in Bologna and took day trips by train to Ravenna and Ferrara, and stopped in Padua on our way from Venice to Verona by train, so that would be an easy day trip. Also took a day trip to Vicenza from Verona by train. So that would work well.

I loved Parma - man there were bikers everywhere but really loved the Certosa di Pavia, several miles out of town - we took a bus there and back - see images of this famous abbey above - can buy some potent stuff the monks brew up (or is it a convent and nuns?) forget.

"I think Garda is harder than Como to explore without a car. Sights are a little more spread out, and the ferry service just doesn't feel frequent enough for leisurely exploring."
The differencies aren't significant:
Boats:
2 daily boats from southern end to northern end of Lake Como (Como to Colico)
3 daily boats from southern end to northern end of Lake Garda (Desenzano/Peschiera to Riva)
Buses:
11 daily buses from south-western end to northern end of Lake Como (Como to Colico)
14 daily trains from south-eastern end to northern end of Lake Como (Lecco to Colico)
10 daily buses from south-western end to northern end of Lake Garda (Brescia and Desenzano to Riva)
13 daily buses from south-eastern end to northern end of Lake Garda (Verona - Peschiera - Riva)
7 daily trains and 17 daily buses along the southern shore of Lake Garda

Your new plan sounds very good, not rushed. On one trip we stayed in Vicenza and enjoyed it's architecture; you could easily visit it from Venice.
Next trip you can head to Lake Como and the Piemonte.
