Probably no help whatsoever since you specified Europe and this after all in the Europe board, but we'd go to Australia/New Zealand. First class tickets for that flight from SFO would be a real plus since it is so long, and these are places we've long wanted to visit.
Now, if it has to be Europe, agree Italy is a bad choice in mid-summer, but we love the country. Our trip to Provence, based in Arles, was wonderful. Prague, Vienna, Budapest was another favorite. We also loved Spain and Greece. I'm leaving, as I'm absolutely no help!!!

Tinabina,
Sorry, so long getting back to you we were skiing in Telluride. We started in Venice. We love the romance of the city and wandering around in the evenings. Took the train to Naples, transferrred to Sorrento. Spent 3 days in Sorrento where we met my husbands cousins. (I found them on the internet.) That was a truly amazing experience. We took the ferry back acrossthe bay to Naples our last evening and boarded the overnight Ferry to Sicily. Most everyone on the ferry is italian and we like to delve into the cultural side of travel. The ferry arrives at 6:30AM in Palermo. We waited at a Coffee Shop for the rental car agency to open then hit the road to the Valley of Temples. It was beautiful, a little touristy. Then on to Taormina. We loved Taormina in the evenings. There is a beautiful town square up the main street with music and people watching. The locals are very friendly and food is wonderful. After a few days in Taormina, we headed to Messina where we dropped off the car and purchased tickets for the ferry to Aeolian Islands. We only stayed in la Salena, but I think it would be fun to try 2 different islands. We loved it and found the experience to be a deeper understanding of the Italian/Sicilian lifestyle. We transferred by hydrofoil back to Naples and took the train to Rome for our last 2 nights. We like to stay near the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. We have met some interesting people at these locations and try to revisit their establishments. This can be a very romantic trip or you can bring the kids. Ours is 19 so he enjoyed the foodie experiences as well as meeting the family. Good luck with your plans. J

Tinabina,
I forgot to add the walled city of Orvieto( one hour outside Rome) in the Umbria hills is very easy to reach by train if you are doing the Rome -Venice route. They have a Venicular that takes you up the hill to the historic town where you can wheel your luggage if you travel light to your hotel/B&B. We also made a stop in Lucca, the Cinque Terre and Sermione in the Lake Region (very short taxi ride from station to hotels) all by train. The nice part of traveling by train is you don't have to worry about the wine at lunch. We did this trip in early June and found the weather wonderful. July might be a bit hotter in Rome, but it is such an amazing city that surely the heat won't matter a bit. J
