Excerpted from a previous post:

Author: Rex ([email protected])
Date: 03/23/2001, 04:45 pm

Message: This - - www.kilkelly.com/Chianti.html- - might seem like just a drop in the ocean (of information on the wines, vineyards and winemakers of Tuscany), but it gives a decent overview, and it specifically lists one of the biggest sellers - - Rocca delle Macie - - at the premier Italian market** here in my hometown (Columbus, Ohio).

Note also that it recommends two enoteca choices in Castellina in Chianti, where wine is served for tasting. In my experience, this is every bit as good as going to a wine producer or vineyard. Go, sit for an hour or two, have the proprietor guide you through the tasting of three or four wines, narrowing in on what YOU like. Then buy a bottle or two - - or more. You'll have the pleasure of re-living, and seeing if it tastes like what you remember, rather than buying some bottles by label only.

Best wishes,

Rex

This is information I've gathered for our next trip. Hope it helps.

Badia a Coltibuono: [email protected]
This is a great winery/restaurant/olive oil producer/balsamic vinegar maker & cooking school. It's about an hour south of Florence. The food is supposed to be excellent and the the winery is gorgeous. They also have a store for tasting wines and oils.

Castello di Verazzano: www.verrazzano.com

Castello Banfi www.castellobanfi.com
Carol, needn't add any more becuase you've received enough pointers to keep you busy for 4 days...however if you do happen to be around Castellina, go and see the village of fonterutoli - it's 4 km south of castellina on rte 222, on the right hand side. Drive slowly; if you blink once too many you'll miss the village. One of the best wineries in my mind (www.fonterutoli.it). I also concur with Monterinaldi: one of the best Classico Riserva's. They will also give you a most detailed road & wineries map of Chianti... Lehayim!
