Would appreciate any inputs in finding a great isolated village. It doesn't need much of anything but remoteness. Criteria is far from other towns (I know thats difficult), that is by road not as a crow flies, higher elevation, end of road (unmade) but not necessarily, could be just a windy dirt road then ends up somewhere.

Check out Volpaia, in Chianti country. But if you want some place really isolated, I think you have to go to Tuscany and just keep taking back roads until you find it.

I agree that the best method is to get a good map as a safety net and just drive until you find what you're looking for. We have some friends who started in Loro Ciuffenna in Chianti, wandered around a little, and ended up in a tiny tiny village where the buildings were so close together they had to walk single file. Whatever this town was it wasn't on a map and it was one of the highlights of their trip.

You can find that in extremme south Tuscany. Radicofani comes to mind. Also, look at Ripa d'Orcia and San Angelo in Colle. Why do you ask?

Thanks all who responded. I have a great map! TCI Toscana, of course. I got the map out with criteria which is actually how I found Fosini (sorry other post), which isn't a town but ruins...ok that works but whats nearby and so on. Some web research turned up Molli, mostly deserted, which is at the end of a road from Sovicille....must park at another small village and walk the remainder 1,2km......11th c. simple church and other buildings pretty much it, great view of Siena.

This is what I found so far, anyone with input on this or other possibilities let me know.

Bob, I'm familiar with extreme south of Tuscany. Ripa is on the list. Have you ever gotten due west of Siena, this is the area I'm referring to. Thanks for any inputs.

Not necessarily remote, but feels like it - San Sano in Chianti. You need an extremely detailed map before it shows up. Off the main Chianti road a bit and no other villages visible. Surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. Residential addresses (about 40) in ancient stone buildings and the only commercial establishments are the Hotel Residence San Sano, which I recommend highly (something like 12 rooms) and a family-run trattoria, very excellent! Oh, yes, the road turns to dirt past the village.

San Sano is about 20 minutes drive north on the 222 from Siena. Just west of the road. Nearest town is Giaole and very near Castello di Brolio.

It doesn't have any particular points of interest, in fact none. Just a very quiet, lovely and very untouristy TINY village.

Thanks, I found it on the map...looks like a slight jog off the main road then hooks back to it. Nearby I see San Fedele is building a new hotel, well refurbishing an existing building...could be an interesting place to stay when its complete. Not far is also Cennina, has anyone been there? If so, go any further to Solata? Thanks for the inputs.
