Turin to Naples Train? Plane?

After 1 week in Paris and 10 days in Turin, around the 17 December 2008 my party [ 3 adults ] will be leaving Turin for 5 days based in Sorrento. After some preliminary reasearch I understand that by train it will take about 9 hours [ Euro AMICA fare 185 Euro first class, 135 Euro second class]. We will hire a car from Naples.

1. Can anyone comment on the logistics of airtravel. Airlines? Convenience? What type of planes. I have an aversion to smaller ones.
2. First v Second class on IC Plus train 523 Mondigliani.

Thankyou dear Fodorites.

I can't help about possible flights, which might be the better option, but for a nine-hour train ride, I would choose first class.

AirOne is showing four flights from Turin to Naples on 17 December for a fare of 91.50 Euro. Two flights are on Boeing 737s, two are on Canadair Regional Jet 900s. Of course, there can be flight time and equipment changes between now and then, but AirOne has a good safety record.

How do you feel about night trains? You can get an Amica fare of 66.60€ for a bed in a three-person compartment on the direct night train.
