Truffles are harvested generally from November to about February. You might find them in specialty shops in Provence in October, but they would be last year's supply (if indeed there are any left - it was a very bad year)and very expensive. I wouldn't personally ever buy a truffle in Provence in October.

October is actually truffle month in Italy, specifically, the Piedmont region. IMHO, the Italian truffles (which are white truffles) are far superior to the French truffles.
Ooolala...consider changing your destination! The Piedmont is riddled with festivals throughout October..a true culinary delight!

Itlaina white truffles are more aromatic than the black ones, but I had good black ones in Tuscany and Umbria when traveling in October. Any Périgourdin will tell you that the only real French truffles must come from the Périgord.

Forget Italy. I've been planning this trip for a year. I just lost the 41 pages of information I had gleamed from this site. Fortunately I have a hard copy and am putting it back into my computer. Italy will be for next time.

One classic dish is scrambled eggs (oeufs brouillé
with truffles, often on menus during truffle season.
I have to say that I've never gotten excited about truffles, perhaps because I'm one of those who can't taste them--just as some cats don't react to catnip.
