Hi I was just in Rome and we drove to Pompeii, there was 5 of us so it was cheaper to drive than take the train. If you also want to go to the museum in Naples you sould spend the night otherwise it's a full day just for Pompeii, if you return to Rome.
We stayed at the Soyna Hotel in Rome just a few blocks from the Termini station and it was a very pleasant place with a very helpful staff. Included breakfast. Also a Rick Steves recomendation. I think it was about 90 ureos a night for two. web sight [email protected] GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY

DeborahAnn, You're Welcome.
I'm a truckdriver and I *hate* getting lost both at work and on vacation . So I do tend to get very detailed in my directions so I don't get other people lost and cursing me from thousands of miles away .
Regards, Walter

jjrod, Pompeii is a 'one of a kind' site and I would max it out.
Take the 1st Eurostar train train out from Rome, which unless the schedules change is 0645 I believe.
Eat breakfast on the train, they have a cafe/snackbar car which sells food. I recall having a ham & cheese crossant and juice for ~5e or less.
In March they might close Pompeii ~4:30-5:00 but I'm not certain. So figure catching the train back ~6-7PM.

Re Pompeii guide - unless your brain dead you don't really need one. Get the audio and small booklet and off you go. I would suggest that you hit the villa with the Fresco's first as its a little out of the way by the time you have trekked around for several hours you may be to tired to do it. They are amazing and worth the effort. The museum is very worthwhile as well. If you are alone the best way would be tour you give up some things but you don't stand in line for tickets and have the hassle of transferring on train. If you’re in a group of 3 or 4 you can hire a driver for the day for about 300-350e then you can go where you want. We paid 300 and gave him a 100e tip because he was super about going where ever we said and it was totally worth it.
This is what we did
Rome to Pompeii, Herculaneum, ran down to Sorrento for lunch and break, back to Naples for the Museum, stopped at country inn type place for dinner on way home. It’s a long day but worth the effort.

"Re Pompeii guide - unless your brain dead you don't really need one."
I am sorry if this sounds more judgemental that n it should, but as you did a trip from Rome, to Pompeii and Herculaneum, and still had time to get to Sorrento for lunch, I am not suprised you did not feel you needed a guidebook.

Willit, I was thinking the same thing. An hour at Pompei, drive to Herculaneum, an hour at Herculaneum, drive to Sorrento, lunch (fast food?), drive to Naples, an hour at the museum... Anything's possible...
