Paris, Outer Banks, Nairobi, Florida to visit relatives--wherever I go, I make it a rule to leave good jewelry at home. I take only my well-worn watch and basic inexpensive earrings. The reason? I don't want to misplace them, drop them someplace where I can't retrieve them, lose them on the beach, OR tempt someone to take them. I go to relax, not impress, and that's one way to simplify my life so I can truly relax while I'm gone and I think it's a good policy for anyone to follow.

My mother-in-law lost her substantial diamond when we were on vacation together. She wasn't mugged: the rock just popped out of the loose setting. The loss really upset her for the rest of the trip (and the rest of us got to deal with the aftermath!)

The moral of the story: if you do want to wear your ring, have the setting checked yearly because they can loosen (especially gold). Even if you know insurance will cover it, a loss can still be upsetting and cast a cloud over your trip.

And yes..I felt a little smug knowing my engagement ring was at home hidden in a teapot!

Fidel,

Answers to technical questions:

Mom pants -- definitely above the belly button, but not quite grandma pants that nearly touch the bra line.

Super Duper low rise -- at least 1/4 inch of *reverse cleavage* showing.

Waisted -- to be really really drunk in pants that either too high or too low.

retiredatlast: AMEN...I never take any jewelry while traveling in Europe and it's a great, relaxed feeling. Never could understand the reason to fool with jewelry...nobody (unless possibly a thief,) notices anyway...and there is a risk of losing or misplacing it).
One can usually tell a person's age by where the waistband on their pants are located. right? &gt We lived overseas and travel to Europe often. My slacks/pants are elastic waists,at the waist.. but pants fairly fitted and tapered at the bottom and clean cut. They are almost always in black or dark color. Top knit shirt covering the waist. We usually travel in the Fall, and early Spring, and there is ALWAYS, in Europe, a SEA of black walking the streets in the cities and towns. My shoes (bad foot and knee) are custom colored athletic shoes in black also!
A younger person would look good in fitted black pants/jeans...but COMFORT is the main thing when traveling ("style" of course, plays a part!)
This is a funny thread...but kind of interesting. I guess the main question was about wearing jewelry, but many of us got "off track" as usually happens with questions on this forum.

Good notes from those who caution that it's all the other things that can happen besides theft ...
A boss of mine who had VERY nice jewelry was taking a top-of-the-lin first class trip when she dropped a full carat diamond stud earring into the drain at her hotel ... as their transport was about to leave for the airport and the next leg of the trip. She was forced to depart with a promise from the hotel to take apart the drain and return it. Of course, she would never know how hard they tried - or what the result was - they reported to her later that they diamond wasn't in the trap (and of course, if water was running, it could have washed away ...)
With all the expensive things that do have to go along (cameras, etc) I suppose it would be easier to roll without costly jewelry. (I'm a guy whose jewelry needs are small ...)

I did once have an episode involving 18K cufflinks I inherited: wore them to a black tie event and, since I needed the shirt for a 2nd event that weekend, took it to my friends' neighborhood laundry. THEN realized I had left the cufflinks in - my friend, a regular customer, took me to the laundry to ask about them, and I did get them back. But I was glad to have him doing the asking.

FWIW, I just wear what I usually wear at home
- wedding ring with modest side diamonds and a truly huge center stone (nope - it's not a diamond, it's a semi-precious that keeps getting mistaken for an emerald)
- tiny emerald studs
- a subtle tennis bracelet
- pretty average solitaire pendant (emerald).

It's never been a problem because that's all I take and I wear it all all the time, so I don't have to worry about keeping track of it. And because it's all almost a part of me, I know when it's gone - feels weird.

I worry about leaving valuables at home. Do any of you store yours in a safe deposit box when you go one vacation? Being gone that long, I worry the little creeps would have time to find anything I hid - even rattle the teapot.

If I lose mine on vacation, at least I lost it. Don't know why that makes me feel better, but it does.

Jeans? Heck yeah. Please, though, just say no to thong cleavage.

laustic, clarifications are very helpful, especially the new (to me) entry of Grandma Pants -- ultra-high rise elastic waisted sweat pants?

Picture Grandma at her kitchen counter rolling out pie dough, someone yells for her to come outside to the garden, she pulls on a pair of stretched out jeans over her dress and apron and runs out the back door, wiping flour from her hands on the pockets, letting the screen door slam shut behind her. She stands with her hands on her hips saying laordy, you almost scared the life out of me, what do ya want, hon?

Not everyone's granny, based on my own, but the visual should do.

<If you are intent on making a 'smiling' impression on the street wear a skirt or tailored slacks.>

Does anyone know what the above means?

I was in Italy and Paris last month and saw lots of jeans and sneaker-type shoes on people of all ages, male and female -- innkeepers, shop clerks and shoppers. Shared a 1st class train compartment with three Italian women, ages late 20s to late 40s, all in jeans and sneakers, the youngest in white Nikes.

I took a photo of a shop window in a town in Italy brimming with sneaker-types including Merrills and Converse All Stars (hightops in various colors). I guess the rest were European brands.

I took a few hundred digital pics and am now looking beyond the sites/sights to people on the street and see jeans, jeans, jeans. I was really sorry that I thought I'd stand out if I'd worn mine and left them home.

Tara, your black jeans will be fine. As for the diamonds, I concur with other posters who advise to leave the ring home if you'll be worrying about losing it or if it will ruin your trip if you do.

BTW, my seatmate on the AF flight to CDG was a Frenchwoman (mid to late 40s) who lives in the states but travels to France frequently to visit family. She said she wears jeans everywhere except to dinner.

Bon voyage and have a wonderful time.

Tara
Leave the jewels at home. I did leave a beautiful ring on the dresser of one hotel room. I was sick to discover this a few hours after I had checked out. Fortunately, the cleaning woman was honest and gave my ring to the front desk.
When I was in Spain, I bought a gorgeous designer heavy silver necklace. I observed a young man looking at me and demonstrating to another how someone could just run up to me and yank on that necklace. I was nervous about wearing it after that and now just prefer to leave it at home rather than worry it would be left or lost or stolen (from hotel safes, too).
To this day, I always leave the nice jewelry at home. Why worry about it, especially if it has some sentimental value.
Jeans and running shoes are everywhere! In fact, when I'm traveling, the only ones I see in this gear are the locals, mostly young.
Many people in other countries like to wear what Americans wear. I found this particularly true in China and Eastern Europe.
Ironically, I get stopped all the time when traveling by locals and am asked for directions. Regularly, and on a daily basis, I am taken for a local. I don't try for that. I just wear what I want to wear and try to fly under the wire while looking nice.
Have a great trip!

Tara - a diamond engagement ring is a LOOONG way from being unusual in Paris - remember, we're talking about one of the most affluent, fashionable cities on the planet, and the French love their jewels and designer gear.

If it was ME, I would wear my ring because I never take it off, but leave the diamond earrings at home because that's the sort of thing I would lose.

I have a big diamond ring. I go to Paris every weekend - French people have jewelery too you know. What's the difference between losing it in the Bon Marche and the Piggly Wiggly?

I am at a loss to know what "trouser style jeans" are? I suppose you are referring to long jeans rather than Daisy Duke style shorts.

Please don't wear big hair or big white sneakers or any item of clthing with a University name emblazoned across the front.

I wouldn't worry about attracting undue attention but just about stupidly losing my engagement ring. Whenever I travel it goes in the safety deposit box alongside my good jewelry that only comes home for special occassions.

I once left diamond studs (1 carat each)in a local hotel room where I stayed for a wedding so I wouldn't drink and drive after the reception. Never saw those again so I bought really good cubic zirconium set in 14 kt gold for several hundred bucks. Lost those. I'm now sporting $9.99 cheapo fakes from Target. But since the rest of my jewelry is very nice people always assume the studs are real and I get lots of comments on them.

Jeans....fine. Valuable or sentimental jewelry...forget it. I left my good jewelry at home (including my wedding band) and only wore things I wouldn't mind anything happening to. "Irreplaceable" means just that. IMO, it's not worth taking a chance.
