Trip Photos - Germany and Austria

Here's a link to the photos from our late October - early November Trip to Germany and Austria.

http://travel.webshots.com/album/579277889nsZFBW

This trip was in memory of our friend, Rick, who died last December at the age of 58. We took his wife, Jeanette, back to two of the towns we had all visited together in 2002 as well as to a few of our favorites.

Our itinerary for this trip: Rothenburg, Meersburg, Berchtesgaden, Hallstatt, St. Gilgen, Bamberg and Bacharach. Since we didn't cover anything new, I am not doing a trip report but I'll be happy to answer any questions.

Hi Betty -
I'll have to look at these later since I'm at work - but sure wish you would write a trip report too! We're going back next May to Switzerland, Germany and Austria.

Gorgeous photos. The fall colors are amazing. Since you been to both Berchtesgaden and Hallstatt twice, if going in September, which one would you recommend?

Thanks!

nicksgirl, I don't know what I could add that I haven't already talked about in my previous trip reports. But if you want to know anything specific, I'll try to help.

lindy27, I would say you should try to see both if possible. There is alot to do in Berchtesgaden at that time of year so you might want to stay there, but Hallstatt definitely deserves at least a stop of an hour or two. And, actually, we've been to Hallstatt several times but this was the first time in late Fall. It was knock your socks off gorgeous but there's just not as much to do as there is in the Berchtesgaden area.

I think Hallstatt deserves a night or two.

Have to log onto my other PC to see your photos... my client's PC blocks your photo link. Looking forward to seeing your photos!

Of course, joannyc is right if you have the time. We spent 2 nights each in Berchtesgaden and Hallstatt on this trip, even though they are only about an hour apart.

Love, love, love your photos! Thanks for sharing!

You even have pictures of some of the hotels in which I stayed.

What kind of camera do you use?

If you list the hotels you stayed (prices, quality, etc.) in, that would be nice.

Yes, bigtyke, I can do that. We booked a double room (DZ) for ourselves and a single room (EZ) for our friend.

Rothenburg - Roter Hahn (69 DZ, 49 EZ). We have stayed at the Roter Hahn in the past. It is a good value in a good location. They also have guest parking and an elevator. There's an internet cafe next door.

Meersburg - Gasthof zum Bären (89 DZ, 47 EZ). Have also stayed here before. Love this hotel. Owner upgraded our friend to a double at no extra charge because the hotel was not full. They have wonderful food in their restaurant and friendly staff. Parking but no elevator. Cash only.

Berchtesgaden - Wittelsbach (98 DZ, 54 EZ). Stayed here before when it was owned by Petra Wimmer. New owner messed up our rez. Charged us for a no show even after he confirmed my date change. We didn't know about it until after we stayed there and paid again! Trying to work it out now to get our money back. Our rooms were fine; breakfast one of the best we had. There is onsite parking and an elevator. The location is wonderful.

Hallstatt - Gasthof Simony (95 DZ, 75 EZ). No frills lakeside hotel with a killer view. Their lakeside restaurant was closed for the season. There is no elevator. Cash only.

St. Gilgen - Hotel Schernthaner (86 DZ, 49 EZ). Our favorite hotel. We have stayed here 3 times and will return next year. Lovely rooms, good breakfast and the nicest owner. Free parking and an elevator.

Bamberg - Hotel Molitor (89 DZ, 70 EZ). Stayed here last year. Would stay again. Friendly staff, nice rooms, elevator and parking. Right around the corner from everthing.

Bacharach - Bacharacher Hof (84 DZ, 57 EZ). First time at this hotel. Nice rooms, elevator, parking and lovely restaurant. Our room was very noisy with (double pane) windows open due to closeness to train tracks but quiet when closed.

Our last hotel was in Ginsheim near Frankfurt Airport. This is our third stay at the Rheinischer Hof (85 DZ, 75 EZ). Lovely location about 20 minutes from the airport. Wonderful restaurant, nice size rooms and parking. No elevator.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Originally I was going to do Berchtesgaden as a daytrip from Salzburg but it seems to have too much to do for 1 day. Then later we were going to spend 2 nights at Hallstatt. I will try to squeeze in two nights at each location! We are doing it all by train so unfortunally the 1 hour drive is 4 by bus/train.

Yikes, 4 hours is a long time for such a short distance. It wouldn't be worth going to Hallstatt for just a daytrip then would it.

I'd consider renting a car for part of your trip.
