Might as well book a hotel for Florence, too, it's the only place you say you weren't going to do so.

You should play with the trains/routing and timetables on the user-friendly Germain railsite:
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?

There might be instances where it would be better to use an intra-Europe budget airline between cities.

One thing to consider is possibly carving out some time for some smaller towns (in Tuscany or Provence perhaps?). All of the places you are visiting are absolutely wonderful but are also all fairly large and busy cities. Some down time in smaller villages in between visits to major cities can be really refreshing. It can give you a chance to catch your breath since some cities can be exhausting after a while (I found Rome and Florence to be particularly exhausting).

You can see more in your time, and save hotel bills, if you take double sleepers. These are quiet, with thick and lockable doors, your own washbasin, and an attendant. If you search under Man in Seat 61 France, and ditto Italy, you will have details, with photos. I have marked “T2” trains that give you double rooms with second class tickets, a good buy. On the Nice to Rome night you either pay for first class to have your own sleeper to yourselves or separate, you in a women’s only room, and your husband in a men-only one next door. Sharing with two Europeans is no disaster, and may give you good conversation, especially if you take an opened bottle of wine and a corkscrew on board. Trains for you are
Paris 2117 Nice 0815, T2
Nice 2107 Florence 0653
Florence by day in a restaurant car express through the mountains to Venice

But you will find better nights and a hotel bill less if you pick
Paris 2117 Nice 0815, T2
Nice 2107 Rome 0942
Rome 2250, Change directions and snatch coffee in Sacile 0709 to 0715, wash at the end of the corridor, Venice 0817. T2. You should book the day journey in Rome.

Hi C,

May I suggest flying Paris PORY to Venice VCE on www.myair.com, then train to Florence, then train to Rome.

You can fly Rome Ciampino to Paris ORY or FCO to CDG.

See www.whichbudget.com

Unles you absolutely want to take the train.

You may find it more efficient to use www.skyscanner.net to check on flight possibilities.
