trip in late May
Hi all:
I've read books, most of the recent postings, and searched the internet. The more I read, the more overwhelmed I get, so am seeking some advice. My family of four, my husband, two sons (20 and 18) and myself are travelling to Greece May 20 to May 31. We want to see Athens, Santorini, and Mykonos. We have our flight - no hotel reservations yet. Based on postings, would like to stay at the Grand bretagne in Athens, Rochari in Myconos. Any suggestions for Santorini? Also, is this a reasonable itinerary? Are we missing something you think we should absolutely see? My husband loves history, the rest of us want relaxation!
Thanks. Joanne

Focus your search for hotels on Santorini to the main village of Fira (and Firostefani). That way your sons can take advantage of the nightlife there and also be close to the beaches using the excellent bus system.

I did just this trip last year. In Santorini we stayed at the Villa Rena located in Firi. We were pleased with the accommodations and service. It has a lovely pool, adequate poolside breakfast, and clean and spacious rooms. I would stay there again. We rented a car and had no trouble driving the island. A visit to Mama's Resturant is an experience if you can locate it. Enjoying the beautiful sunsets along the edge of the caldera is an nightly island event. You may wish to check out the excavations of the ruins (located near the red beach) They were closed to the public when we were there, but hopefully will have been re-opened by now.
We also stayed at the Rochari in Mykonos. It is a lovely hotel with a great breakfast buffet. Good location, but it takes a few tries to learn the way to town thru the quaint walkways located off the back of the hotel.
If your husband loves history, a ferry ride to the island of Delos might interest him. I found it fasinating. (Be sure to bring lots of water) Also the National Archeological Museum in Rome will be a must-see for him.

Joanne-
We'll be doing a similar trip at about the same time. We're staying in Santorini at Residence Suites in Oia, on Crete at the Blue Palace in Elounda, and in Athens at the Grand Bretagne. My husband loves history as well--hence the trip to Crete re: the WWII battles, etc. In Athens, my husband enjoyed the War Museum. Have a great trip!
