9 days total. One of my friends is very interested in the Holocost so something that includes some of that history is a possibility. Also, one friend has already done Paris and parts do Italy so we are trying to do something different for her.

if your whole trip is 9 days then you will have a grand total of 6.5 days free on the ground . . . and if you are flying in and out of Barcelona you will have to be back there the night before you fly out - stick to Spain or maybe visit someplace in nearby SW France.

I'm not sure I would agree about Berlin and holocaust history, since so much of that city was destroyed. It might have great monuments to the period, which is, I think a very different thing. JMO.

Are you flying into and out of Barcelona? If so, I would spend the entire time in northeastern Spain. It isn't that much time.
Spend 4-5 nights in Barcelona then rent a car or bus/train to Bilboa, San Sebastien, the coastal area, whichever areas you like after your research. You could do a circular route starting and ending in Barcelona. Drop the car at Barcelona airport the morning of your flight home, if you have time to drive from your last destination that morning. Otherwise, drive back to Barcelona the night before the flight. And drop the car after checking into your hotel.
