Trenitalia Starts DIRECT trains between FCO Airport and Firenze SMN
New DIRECT TRAINS between ROME FIUMICINO AIRPORT and FIRENZE SMN Station:
Effective December 14, 2014, Trenitalia will offer two daily DIRECT Frecciargento trains from ROME FIUMICINO AIRPORT to Firenze SMN, which avoid a connection at Roma Termini. These two trains will STOP for 10 minutes at Termini station and for two minutes at Tiburtina station, but then proceed nonstop to Firenze SMN. THERE IS NO CHANGE OF TRAINS if you travel on one of these two DIRECT trains.
The trains will depart from the Fiumicino Airport train station at 11:08 and 15:08, and arrive in Florence 2 hours and 14 minutes minutes later. On the Trenitalia website, enter "Fiumicino Aeroporto" and "Firenze S.M.Novella". The nondiscounted "BASE" fare will be 51 Euros in second class. Discounted promotional fares as low as 19 Euros will be offered, but are very RISKY if a flight delay causes the booked passenger to MISS the scheduled train: the consequences are a complete FORFEITURE of the train ticket. For this reason, many experienced travellers will elect to purchase a full-fare ticket at the airport train station rather than risking a forfeiture with a discounted ticket purchased online in advance.
It continues to be possible to travel to Florence VIA Roma Termini station OR Roma Tiburtina station, i.e. with a CONNECTION-change of trains. Trenitalia continues to offer Freccia trains to Florence from Roma Termini.and Roma Tiburtina every 5-35 minutes. The nondiscounted "BASE" fare is 43 Euros in second class. Travel time from Termini station is 1 hour, 32 minutes (less from TIburtina).
NOTE: Taking the DIRECT Frecciargento train from FCO Airport to Florence costs 51 Euros, while CONNECTING at Roma Termini will cost 14 + 43 Euros, and CONNECTING at Roma Tiburtina will cost 8 + 43 Euros. NOTICE THIS DIFFERENCE IN FARES!!!
Rival Italo Treno continues to offer frequent daily trains from Roma Tiburtina Station to Firenze SMN. The lowest promotional fare is also 19 Euros, while the nondiscounted "BASE" fare is also 43 Euros in second class (but you must add 8 Euros to reach Tiburtina from FCO airport by Trenitalia airport train).
On the RETURN trip to Roma Fiumicino Airport, the first Trenitalia direct Frecciargento train departs Firenze SMN at 7:38, arriving at FCO train station at 9:52. The second direct Frecciargento train departs Florence at 11:38 and arrives at FCO at 13:52.
