"Servizio chiuso alle prenotazioni "
I had this message recently. It had to do with being able to see the red "buy" button because of the time difference which turns on at midnight 59 days prior Italy time, but when you acutally try to purchase from the US, it is 6 (?) hours earlier and it won't let you. If you had waited until after midnight and tried at 12:01AM, it should have gone through.
It probably wasn't necesssary to buy them so far in advance, but I got the 29 euro fare and the peace of mind that this is taken care of already.

Any Fodorite who goes to the trouble of staying up until Midnight in order to lock in one of Trenitalia's promotional rates 59 days in advance should receive a medal.
Nevertheless, I can assure everyone that such drastic measures are neither required nor encouraged: booking these promotional fares so far in advance is NOT akin to booking frequent flier tickets!!!!!
But for peace of mind .......

Just as a follow up - I ended up purchasing 6 tickets online on 1/27/03 at 9:00 EST for a trip from Naples to Rome on March 26, 2005. Knowing that the 26th was the Saturday of a holiday weekend and there were 6 of us traveling, I wanted to book early. Even booking that far in advance I was only able to get 4 tickets at the 15 Eur Trenitalia SATURDAY special. All others had been sold out. I eneded up paying the full fare for the other 2 tickets. In this case, if I had waited any longer, I'm sure there would have been no 15 eur tickets left.

MWM1: good information to post. Of course, this is the Easter Sunday weekend, so we can't be surprised to learn that tickets at the 15 Euro rate have already sold out.
Once again, Fodorites, good information to bear in mind if you plan to travel on Trenitalia during a holiday period or between June 15 and September 15.

"Message: Are there ticket counters where we can buy the tickets without spending time at the ticket machines?"
Once you have used the machines, you would not do it any other way. They are in English and there is little or wait.

Is there a way to call Treniatia directly from States? They provide only 6 digit number without city code. 89 20 21. I was able to make a reservation on the Naples-Nice riviera train. They provided me a Travel Dossier number. But I am still not sure if the tickets are confirmed.
