We never had problems finding seats together. We did have first class whenever it was available and basically, it was less crowded and less "funky" smells.
Some routes were only second class and that never caused a problem.

How many are you? If you reserve seats, you can get seats together. If you haven't reserved and the train is busy, you may have to sit in isolated empty seats. Generally, second class is more crowded than first because most people don't want to pay an extra 50% for a slightly bigger seat.

seems so tricky to request a refund, do you think i can change it when i get there(at Termini) a few days ahead of time? Next time i buy tickets, do you reccommend that i buy one at a time to ensure that we are next to each other?

Hi tc,
I think if you request a refund, you get a confirmation code that you can then use to pay for your new ticket.
You can turn in your ticket(s) at Rome TE and buy 2 new ones.

Considering your recent experience, that might be a good idea.
I think you are the first person to report this problem (on this board)when the train wasn't just about full.
When we bought our tickets for our Italian trip, we did have one time when we were across the aisle from each other, but we just changed places with some other people.

This is an ES train, yes?
Chances are if your seats are not right next to one another, they are in the same group of four. My experience is that most Italians will "go with the flow" about seating. If others see you are traveling together, they will happily shift seats so that you can sit next to one another or facing one another. It may be that the other seats in your group aren't taken, so you can sit wherever you want. Certainly the conductor will be unconcerned if you are in the correct seat, as long as you are on the correct train. I wouldn't concern myself too much about this. How long is the trip?

tccgirl, when I booked our seats for the Eurostar last summer on-line, it automatically assigned us 5 seats together. What bad luck for you! I wonder if they assigned you aisle seats across from each other or something?
See if there is any help for you on the train travel info section on www.slowtrav.com
Did you choose 1st or 2nd class? On our Eurostar trains we sat in 1st class and there were usually a few empty seats. I walked through the 2nd class cars and they were much fuller.
good luck!
