John thoroughly enjoyed reading your comments on your travels to London and the inaguration(I'm from DC so I love to hear about visits here). I'm sure I will read your other cities soon (when I have time). Anxiously waiting to hear about your Australia adventures. Maybe we'll beat you there. Thanks for such great information.

John: I am reading your travelsite, especially the one with Clint in UK. Lots of fun reading and perfect for information on my own trip coming up in a few more days with my son. Thanks for sharing, need to get back to reading your travelogue. I especially liked Clint making sure Jane Austen really was deceased by checking out her grave.

Enjoying your site John. I haven't had time to read much yet, but I have been looking at the Rome part. Always glad to see someone from Madison aboard. I moved back to NC nearly six years ago after 7 1/2 in Madison. What a great city, and I do miss it. Since my family all lives in NC, I became very familiar with United flights out of Madison via Chicago (at least twice a year). I have a photo and travelogue site at www.oneeyed.homestead.com. I am adding a fairly large travelogue and photo section right now from a very recent trip to Italy. I expect the first new photos on by the end of the week and all within three weeks.

John
I am unable to view your travelogues for some reason. On the home page I click on each one, the page changes, I get a title page for the travelogue, I click on "next page" and nothing else happens. I tried both Rome and London.
I wasn't even able to email you
by clicking on "write me" either.
Is it my computer?

You go, Dan! Mark and I enjoyed having dinner with you and Gina in the Rome, even though the four of us were dead tired from sight-seeing that day. I sure regret not having tiramisu for dessert after seeing that huge pan of it.

Got the trip photos back yesterday and will post a few of the good ones soon. We returned Tuesday, 6 Nov, a little travel weary and with Parisian head colds, but ready to plan the next trip, which I hope will include some of that tiramisu!

Hi Betsy, I was going to send an e-mail, I will just post here since you are online today. I saw a few days ago that you were back. We really enjoyed our get together in Rome. It was definitely one of the most fun things we did on the trip, and I am glad you found the place that night. For some reason we seemed to meet a lot more people than usual on this trip, especially in Rome. We had dinner conversations with a guy from CNN (on vacation), a German couple (with a three-month old) who had just shaken hands with Bill Clinton, and another couple whom we sat beside the night after dinner with you (that was a two-hour conversation). Sorry to say Sally that we were all a little lazy about the photo because as Betsy said we were all pretty tired (even I take fewer photos when weariness sets in). In fact, I rarely take photos during dinner because I am relaxing from the long day; usually I regret it later, as I do in this case. We just have the memories I guess.

To keep this on track, John, Sally's site has links to other travelogues. I will also offer a few of my favorite travel photography sites, which in some cases include travelogues:

www.photo.net
www.danheller .com
www.jimtardio.com

John,

I really am impressed by your website but I have to admit I was totally aghast when the first travalogue I read, San Francisco, called Silicon Valley a toilet! You ask why anyone would want to live here and then you seem to answer the question yourself as you explore all the fantastic places their are to visit! And the reason high-tech companies locate (and in fact are born here) has little to do with a prestige address but everything to do with the world class Universities that turn out Nobel lauriates as well as brilliant technologists, a climate that attracts a huge workforce, and a host of companies to spawn and give birth to next generation technologies. Yes, the traffic is terrible and the cost of living high. But everytime I think of moving I can't think of leaving a place where I can be in the mountains in an hour, on the coast in an hour, or find tranquility in a redwood grove in an hour. And when I fly home from anywhere I realize how truly beautiful the area is.

OK, this is the Europe board.... and I do love Europe but I had to say that!

Sunnyvale and Grasshopper,

I went back and reread what I had written about San Jose. I agree that calling it a "toilet" was harsh. Sorry to have stepped on your toes - but I do stand by my impression of San Jose (I would describe my hometown of Birmingham, Alabama in much the same way).

As far as all the wonderful things to do in the area, you are absolutely correct. I look forward to visiting San Francisco (and surrounding area) again.

Back to "Europe", I am working on my Scotland journal and have the first few days posted.

john

Hi John, If you didn't see my recent thread called "New webpage travelogue!", I just posted too, starting with: www.costumegoddess.com/england.htm
This covers the first 3 out of 7 weeks of travel to England, France, Spain, Italy, Greece and Egypt.
My gosh, your travelogue is incredibly detailed! You must've kept a journal the size of a telephone book!! I slacked off in that department.
Mine is more of an impressionistic montage and has lots of pictures along with what recollections I have, although I couldn't tell you exactly what and where I ate each day, how long I stood in line, or what I paid!

Hi John:

Nice site! I had trouble viewing the text, because it was black over black on my screen. Not sure if that's just my computer, but I read in a response above that it might have been on a problem on someone else's computer also.

Anyway, you asked for travelogues to read, so here goes!

The online literary magazine for travelers, The Long Trip Home, has quite a few travelogue style writings, as well as other creative travel writings (including poetry, travel journals, and more). The site's been up since December 2001, and we're really excited about its growth, etc. Check out the site and read some of our articles on travel to all sorts of places, including Italy, Indonesia, France, Mexico, Spain, and much more. We also have some pretty great photo journals.

Here's the link to the home page of the site:

http://www.thelongtriphome.com

Check out our links page, too, for some more travel writing sites worth visiting!

Happy Travels and Enjoy!

Jackie
