Traveling from Assisi to Rome

We had intended to drive from Assisi to Rome and drop off our car at Hertz in downtwon Rome. Would it be better to drop off the car at Orvieto and take the train into Rome. We're staying at the Hotel Tibullo not far from the Vatican. What do you think? Thanks!

Gardeninggal,

You can easily drop your car in Foligno which is very close to Assisi. It's about a 1 1/2 train to Rome.

Were you planning to visit Orvieto anyway?

On our first trip to Italy we dropped off our Hertz rental car in downtown Rome, near the Borghese gardens. It was no problem driving into the city at the time we did (mid-day, mid-week), but finding the actual entrance to the underground parking lot where the agency is located was a little difficult. We would/could do it again, but other people's suggestion about dropping off in Orvieto and training into Rome seems reasonable too. Gives you an excuse to visit that lovely location. Personally, I wouldn't miss the opportunity of exploring the back roads of Umbria by dropping the car off in Assisi. There's still too much to see on the way to Rome.

If it's a Sat or Sunday especially traffic in Rome is way down.

Hi gardeninggal, if you do decide to turn your rental car in at Orvieto another poster about a week or so ago posted that there is now a Traveler's Help desk at the Orvieto train station. They will direct you to a very close by place (just down the street) where you can store your luggage if you wish to visit Orvieto while there. Have a wonderful trip!
