Car rental in Umbria and itinerary?
My husband and I plan to take an early morning train from Rome to Assisi to spend the day there (late March) before heading to the Perugia airport to pick up a car rented through Auto Europe. That night we plan to stay at a farm/bed and breakfast for one night near Assisi before driving the next morning to our logding either outside of Todi (still trying to decide on specific place) or between Todi and Orvieto at Fattoria di Titignano for two nights. We plan to spend 2 days visiting Todi, Orvieto, and any other place in the area that we have time for at a relatively relaxed pace. On the fourth morning, we'll return the rental car at Orvieto and take the train back into Rome.
Questions:
Since we're coming from Rome, does it make sense to pick up the car in Perugia? Auto Europe had better rates than Avis and didn't seem to have a location in Assisi.
Does anyone know the easiest way to get from Assisi to the Perugia airport? How much does that tend to cost?
Has anyone gone horseback riding in Umbria? We think it might be a fun morning activity and is offered near several of the places we're thinking about staying.
Sorry this post is so long. We'll be happy for any info you can provide!

Not knowing how committed you are to reservations at this point, I might suggest reversing the order of your visit. Picking up the car in Rome (Termini) or Orvieto--I believe the fear of exiting Rome is overstated--but many of the visitors to this site enjoy letting their car in Orvieto. Then visiting the southern Umbria, Orvieto, Todi (you know I adore Titignano) and journeying northward to a final day in Assisi, Perugia area. I should also say, it is possible, and perhaps more comfortable, to visit all these locations from one lodging. Return the car to Orvieto on your return south.

Christi, Get you car before Assisi. Ask Autoeurope, but I believe that Chiusi or Perugia will be your best options. Orvieto is a good drop point but I am not sure you can pick up there.
And, stay at Malvarina if you want horses. Good luck !

Thanks for the input! Orvieto is a drop off only place for Auto Europe.
Is it possible to take the train directly to Perugia from Rome? It might be easier to do that and then drive to Assisi from there for the first day of sightseeing in Umbria.
Anyone know how to get to the Perugia airport from the train station?
Also, we're starting in the north because at least one place we want to go in Orvieto (museum) is closed on Monday, our first travel day.
Thanks!

Hello Cristi,
As Bob says, it's easier to pick it up before Assisi. This may be too late if you've already booked it, but logistically your best places to collect it would be TERNI, SPOLETO or FOLIGNO - which are all on the train route to Assisi.
Perugia is AFTER Assisi (20-30 mins) by train, not before.
There is a (slow) direct Rome-Perugia train at 08.14 arriving Perugia 10.55, but your quicker option from Roma Termini is:
07.37 (EUROSTAR) ... change at FOLIGNO.
This arrives at Perugia at 10.00 (Assisi 09.35).
There is an infrequent bus service between Perugia station and the airport. Otherwise you may have to get a taxi.
Hope this helps ...

P.S. Cristi - It looks like you may have to get a taxi to Perugia airport either from Assisi station or Perugia.
The airport website lists buses from Perugia station only at 13.00 and 17.05.
Here's the link:
http://www.airport.umbria.it/aeroporto/trasporti.htm
I can't help thinking you will save yourselves a lot of inconvenience if you can re-arrange your hire to pick up AND drop off from SPOLETO, TERNI or CHIUSI (as Bob suggested).
[This should be cheaper too, as you should save the airport supplement and the drop-off charge].

Thanks for the advice. I believe I read that Auto Europe is in Spoleto. Any ideas on how near the train station the car rental office would be? Would that be a nice town to spend a couple of hours walking around before driving to Assisi for the afternoon/evening?

Hello Cristi,
Sorry I don't know the location of the car office. But, if there is a town in which to spend a few hours--yes, Spoleto would be one. Of course, it is famous for its music festival, but also you will find a wonderful duomo, the famous Roman aqueduct, Ponte delle Torri, the Rocca (castle), now a national museum and many more historic sites. Enjoy.
