Hi shanrae,
Don't worry. I can't imagine that you'll have any trouble buying your tickets at the train station.
We've taken many many Italian trains, and I don't think we have ever bought tickets in advance.
We do, however, check the schedules and have a good idea of the train we want.
My husband usually writes the train we want (destination, time) on a 3x5 card and shows it to the ticket seller, just so there will be no language problem(not likely).
Have a wonderful trip!

Last time I went to Italy, I started in Rome and went to an American Express travel agent (this office was near the Spanish Steps). The arranged all my tickets for the next two weeks with no additional cost to me. I used an AmEx card to pay for it, but I don't think that was a requirement. It was even easier than doing it at a train station.
