This is a great thread with useful information. Is it worth getting 1st class for Rome to Florence €41 vs 2nd class €28. The question is for all routes.

I think the Amica fare is for two or more people traveling together, not singles, and is only good on certain trains.

Trains allowed
Express, IC, ICN, IC Plus, ES*city, ES*, AV and T-Biz, couchettes and WL
Prices
Reduced by 20% with respect to the Standard Fare, Minimum Price 10 euro.
Ticket
Can be bought up until midnight on the day before train departure and for a limited number of places.

Are the Amica's fares only available online, or can you buy them in person a few days in advance if they have availability?

yeadonite - The train ride from Rome to Florence is only 90 minutes on an ES train. 2nd cl ES has more space and more comfortable seats than coach on airlines. Usually it's 2 seats facing 2 seats with a small table to share. This picture link is for the Cisalpino train, but is essentially the same layout as most ES 2nd cl.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cisalpino

1st cl will have will have the 2x2 configuration on one side of the aisle, but on the other it will be 1x1.

Hi Everyone,

Here I am again with this thread. I don't know if it's me or just buying train tickets online is very difficult! We leave for our trip next Monday (very excited) and I would like to buy tickets in advance for travel between Rome and Florence AND Florence and Venice. I have it all worked out ... when I want to travel, what times, trains, etc. But now that I am actually ready to buy the tickets, the site asks me to register, which I did, and now have been waiting 2+ days for a password so that I can access the system and buy the tickets. Am I missing something?!

You are experiencing the same trouble many people have when trying to use the site. In more than 20 trips to Italy that involved train travel, I've never bought my train tickets before arriving there.

If you will be in Rome for a few days before your train travel, just buy the tickets then. You can buy them at the train station from the machines or windows, or from a travel agent with the Trenitalia logo in the window. Bring along a printout of the trains you want to speed the process.

Did you do this on Trenitalia? What exact credit card did you use?

Cheryl, were you required to register and then wait for a password? I went thru the process of selecting a date, train, time, number of tickets etc. then the next screen asked me to enter my email address and told me I would be emailed a password. I cannot seem to get any farther in purchasing without the password. What website were you on? I am using trenitalia.it (which also takes you to trenitalia.com)

Thanks, Shannon

Shannon,
It was trenitalia.com site. Yes I filled out the registration. They sent a password by e-mail---you can switch it to one of your choice---then just used it to sign in. I did try some time ago as was not sold the tickets. This time it was fast.

shanrae71,

Passwords usually take anywhere from 1-4 days to come back from them unless you get locked out and have to request to be reinstated. They say that takes 48 hours but my reality was more like 4 weeks.

FYI - here's a post with a lot of info about navigating the Trenitalia site and a laundry list of issues you can run into with it - http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...aelT&fid=2

thanks Michael! I wish I had read your post a couple of months ago when I was first looking into this. Now, a week before departure, I don't have 4 weeks to wait for a password! I guess I'll just see what happens and if all else fails, try to get them first thing when we get to Rome.

The 4 weeks was only if you get locked out of the system and need to be reinstated. The password should come through, hopefully before you leave.

My suggestion would be that if it doesn't come soon, create a new account and try it again. The system is funny in that sometimes it responds quickly and other times, it doesn't.

If not, as many others have said, buying tickets there is really easy either through the automated machines or at a window. Just remember that the Amica Fares (discounted) can only be sold up to 24 hours before travel.

Good luck and have a great trip!

michael ... you're a genius! i tried a different email and received a password instantly. voila! HOWEVER, now I tried to do the purchase and received the dreaded "DENIED" message. Oh well. Maybe I will try again later or just get them there. Thanks for all your help.
