Travel to UK - Passport expires soon
We leave on Mar 16 for a 12 day UK trip that will take us to London, York & Edinburgh. My passport expires May 27. I don't believe that UK has a rule that passport must be valid for 6 months after date of arrival. I have read that as long as the passport if valid during my entire UK stay I'll be fine. Is this correct? Or should I get in line tomorrow to renew my passport? Thanks.

It depends on your nationality.
If you require a visa (for example,if you're Indian), there are rules about passport validity and you need to check with the UK consulate about this when you apply for the visa.
If you don't need a visa (and Americans, Canadians, Japanese etc don't, normally) the only rule about passport validity is that your passport must be valid for the whole of your stay. You don't need to renew your passport.

for international travellers - its 6 months left from the day you enter the UK. Its possible to gain entry without this - but it all depends on the person who checks your passport. Personally i would advise not risking it. renew your passport before you go - most countries have an express service. use it!

Why would you even wait to get a new paasport knowing that you are travelling to Europe and your passport expires almost simultaneously?
You should have gotten it long ago. I would absolutely send it expedited for the additional money and get it now.

Where did theseboots get that information from? The Home Office has no such rule for non-visa nationals.
All foreigners may be refused admission to the UK at an immigration officer's discretion. But the officer, ultimately, has to show cause. Short passport validity is not such a cause.

I would have renewed before now - and you may want to do an expedited service now. But theseboots info is not correct. Your passport does not need any extended validity -- except for special circumstances like flanneruk mentions.

Ok - i should have qualified my statement with....''when you apply for a visa to enter the UK'' you need six months left on your passport from the day you plan to enter the country.
I am presuming this person does need a visa - if you are from China, India or Russia you will need a visa to enter the uk..
check http://www.ukvisa.gov.uk for all the inane details.
if you are on this list you need a visa:

hope that helps.
