Travel Pass

I am going to be in London for three days, what is the best type of travel pass to purchase?. I will require one that can be used to & from Heath Row.

Buy no passes at all.
For the trip from Heathrow into London and back take either the Heathrow Express(a train) or the tube.
Buy your Express ticket ,once you are at Heathrow, from a self-serve machine or on the tran.
Buy a tube ticket from the tube ticket booth..the ticket seller will help you with the fare.
Once you are in London , just buy tube tickets at the tube stations.

If you are going to be travelling on the tube much at all, it is worth buying a one day Travelcard each day. They cost just over twice the price of a single ticket (if you buy it after 9:30am), so if you travel 3 times in a day, it's worth it. Oh, and you can use it on the buses too. For the Heathrow trips, just buy single tickets.

If you're here over a weekend, you can get a 2 day weekend pass which works out even cheaper.

Other than that, you're looking at a weekly ticket which wouldn't be worth it for 3 days.

Oh, and you'll almost certainly only need Zone 1 Travelcards as most of the tourist attractions are within zone 1. You can find a zone map at www.thetube.com to double check what you need.

If you're travelling to or from Heathrow and doing sightseeing on the same day, then get a Travelcard that covers Heathrow which is in Zone 6 - this will be cheaper than buying a single ticket for Heathrow and a travelcard for central London.

Thanks for the correction Geoff. I hadn't actually noticed how little difference there was between a zone 1 and a zone 1-6 travelcard. Definitely works out cheaper that way.

If you are travelling from outside the UK, the Visitor card is the pass you want - see http://www.ticket-on-line.com/cgi-bi...vtc_zone_guide

hi james,

I would like to personally recommend the 3 day VISITOR TRAVELCARD. for about 18 pds you will have unlimited travel on metro and buses in zones 1-6(covers heathrow).

make sure to purchase it thru the www.thetube.com, then click on travelcards at the bottom. they will send it to directly, free of charge. if you purchase from them you are sent the actual travelcard not the voucher. all you have to do is step off the plane and you can immediately use your card. no waiting, no purchasing, no photocards etc.

I prefer the convienence of this card, rather than the inconvienence of worrying about day cards, etc.

Well let's see...

Zone 1-6 travelcard £5.10
zone 1-2 travelcard £4.30

Three days of travelcard use £13.70

3 day visitor's travelcard £18

By my math that's £4.30 for "convenience"

Incidentally, once you have a fourth day involved, then you buy the 7 day pass either from the visitor's travelcard site or on arrival in London.

In London there are no 3 day passes and remember the 1 day pass is not valid before 9:30 on weekdays although there is a slightly higher one day pass that is valid before 9:30.

The only draw back of the 1 day passes are the queues that form at stations just before 9:30. If that is the case, then you can use the machines and the newer machines now take credit cards.....
