travel outside of prague
Will be in Prague this May with hopes of visiting birthplace of my great grandmother in Svitavy, some distance away. Is it very expensive to rent a car in Prague...there doesn't seem to be train and don't know about bus. Thanks for any info

I don't know the cost, but it would be a lot more convenient to drive. Plus it would give you opportunity to see other sites you might find interesting. There's a fascinating museum of folklore in Uherske Hradiste, about 60 miles SE of Svitavy, with mannequins wearing examples of the various folkwear worn by people of the region, perhaps even by your gt gd ma.

thanks for your reply-I agree that the convenience may make it worth any cost but the transfer fees that I have been looking at once your arrive in Prague worry me that car transportation might be "out of sight"! The museum does sound interesting-so thanks for that lead.

I googled it, first rental car url I tried Opel Astra for a week = $405.00.
Is that "out of sight"? Will you be in Prague frequently, or is this a once-in-a-lifetime trip? If the latter, what's $200 spread over the rest of your life?

Check out rates on Auto Europe. We've rented through them twice out of Prague (and also used them on other trips). They are a consolidator and their rates are very competitive.
I think renting a car is the way to go to give you the greatest flexibility. But you should book it before you leave to get the best rate. Prague is wonderful and it sounds like you have the adventure of a lifetime ahead of you. Enjoy!

I know you're right but we would probably spend most of our days in Prague itself and just one day driving to Svitavy(formally Zittau)..maybe we can find something for a shorter time..thanks for finding this for me though, I've been reading old postings which have had valuable info also. Are you familiar enough with the Czech republic to know how far this town is from Prague? I even have an old postcard with the address of my great grandmother which was sent to her by a sister who came to America a few years before she did in 1904. Sorry for the long note. jan

Brilliant! thanks for the help-I just went to auto europe and can rent a car for as little as $200 for 48hrs and this would certainly be the way to go!
Tomboy, we can even go to the folklore museum...now does anyone know of antique fleamarkets in or around Prague?
