Travel on a shoestring??
Hi..
I'm planning to travel through Europe this summer on a low budget. France, Spain, Greece and Sweden (got friends there) are on my list. I planned to travel by train, but then I checked the prices on the net, and it seems that travelling by plane, will cost you nearly the same and of course save you a lot of time. My problem is, that I don't quite know where to search for tickets? Where do i find the cheapest flights?
Hope you can help me..
Best regards
Katie

You can cross France by train for 20€ if you book at the right time and use the www.voyages-sncf.com site. I doubt if you'll find better deals by air, not to mention missing all of the scenery.

Hi Katie.
I just read an article about top-flight bargains. There is a big difference on prices depending on where you search, because of the big competition on the travel market.
Recently some helpful sites have emerged, which simply scan airlines, online travel agencies and cheap low cost carriers. This way you “google” for flights and then the sites provide links to websites and airlines that sell tickets.
The article mentions:
www.kayak.com
www.momondo.com
www.sidestep.com
www.skyscanner.co.uk
www.travelsupermarket.com
Right now, kayak.com has the most complete scan in the US, whereas Momondo.com has the most complete scan in Europe.
Hope you find it useful

I too am travelling on a tight budget, so I understand the challenge! I just kept searching. For example, I thought www.travelation.com good until I went to check expedia and found a Chania-
Venice flight for $30 less. Good luck!

Try www.easyjet.com or www.ryanair.com
Unfortunately you have left it so late that you might not find too many cheap flights left.

I would recommend you try using www.skyscanner.net or whichbudget.com but be aware that those two sites only look at budget airlines.
When you think about all that "time" you are going to save by flying I recommend you consider the following:
the time it takes to get to and from an airport and the costs involved to do so
the time it takes to wait for check-in security screening
the time it takes to wait for bags in case you check any
the weight restrictions on checked luggage and sometimes on carry-on luggage

Hi Katie,
Flying wont always save you time or money.
First, you have to get to the airport at least 2 hours before your flight. Then there is the travel time (and cost) from the airport of the city you just arrived in.
Where as, most of the trains end up in the center of the city. And as kerouac pointed out, you will miss all the beautiful scenery.
