Travel help (Krakow, Vienna, Prague)

Hi everyone,
This July I am going to spend two weeks in Germany traveling for a teachers workshop. Afterwards, I am planning on spending a few weeks in Europe traveling around. Right now I am looking to fill a week (7/20-7/28) before my one week tour of Southern Italy. Originally, I thought I would spend the week prior seeing the sites of Italy before the tour of the South began. However, as it turns out I will still have a few days to tag on in Italy after my tour is complete.

This is what I need help with:
1. I will be completing my workshop in Berlin on 7/20. My goal was to visit any of the following options: Warsaw, Krakow, Prague- fly to Rome

2. Prague, Vienna, Krakow- fly to Rome

3. Prague and Krakow- fly to Rome

- I really want to see Auschwitz which is why I set on Krakow (yes I know it is an hour away).
Or do I have it all wrong?- Please provide suggestions and how should I travel to each place? Train? Euro Rail? Where can I find the best rail deals?

1. With only a week 3 cities are too much. You won't have time to do justice to any of them.

2. Same as comment 1.

3. Prague and Krakow - yes, you could visit Prague and Krakow, spending 3 days in each. Krakow is much more than Auschwitz; it's a wonderful city so please spend some time there and discover its delights.

Berlin to Prague is 4.5 hours. Buy your tickets ahead for the best fares. You should fly between the other cities as you do not have enough time to take trains.

Euro Rail is not a transportation method. It is a train pass.

Given your timetable, you would do best to consider just two of the cities. Given that you want to visit Auschwitz, that really means you should add Krakow to your itinerary and decide between Prague and Vienna. Look at the train schedules on bahn.de to see how much time you'll spend transiting between places, as well.

What are your interests? Prague and Vienna (and Krakow) offer different experiences. Personally, having been to Krakow (once), Prague (twice), and now living in Vienna, I would choose Krakow and Prague (not that I don't love living in Vienna). Krakow and Prague, however, offer more than enough to fill your time, without the expense of Vienna.

Thanks for the replies. I think I am going to stick to Prague and Krakow. I have a co-worker who is Polish who goes back to Poland in the summer and has offered me a place to stay. I think she is located in the Krakow surburbs so I might take her up on that offer.

I know that there is a lot to do in Krakow besides Auschwitz so Adrienne I hope that I did not offend you.

Also is bahn.de the best site to use to for booking train fares?

You didn't offend me at all. I just wanted to be sure you didn't miss some of the wonderful things Krakow offers and not just focus on Auschwitz. I highly recommend the Krakow Under the Occupation Museum.

For trains originating or ending in Germany bahn.de is the best site for booking. The earlier you book the better the fare. I also use this site for train schedules for other European countries as it's so easy to use and gives so much information such as complete routes and stops and a map.
