You have to go through Milan, as far as I know; furthermore, I seem to recall that there are two kinds of rail "companies" that serve the area around Malpensa and Como - - the "normal" Ferrovie del Stato ("trenitalia"
and one other company whose name escapes me.

Best wishes,

Rex
[email protected]
A quick review of train schedules shows that most schedules are not direct and there is a change in Milan as the Venice to Milan trip is by Eurostar and the MIlan to Como via IC. However there are some trains that, although slower, have direct service.

For any and all train schedules in Europe you might enjoy using the GermanRail on-line site which is http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
this is the English language page. I have found this to be one of, if not the most, accurate schedule sites apart from having a Thomas Cook timetable readily at hand.
Try it and see what you think.

Rex: the other company is Ferrovie Nord Milano (Fmn), whose trains leave from Cadorna Station. FNM is to be preferered for a highly scenic arival in Como (a art noveau station right in front of the lake) for those leaving directly form Milano (it is the best choice for daytrips). Fs station is placed in a rather unattractive area some 10-15 minutes walk from the center of the city, but for anyone arriving in Milano by train it is still the best solution because it spares the need to leave Centrale station, take the subway and get to Cadorna. By the way FS railway from milano to Como passes right through my own town, Sesto San Giovanni ^_^
