Varenna to Venice?
I am planning on flying into Milan and then taking the train to Varenna to relax.
Then we are going to Venice. My question - does this make sense? Will it take to long from Varenna to Venice?

We took this route this fall and it was quite easy. We purchased our train tickets at the travel agency in Varenna for both the train into Milan and the Eurostar Milan to Venice. I think we left Varenna about 7:30 am, made a quick connection in Milan and arrived in Venice about 11:30 a.m. Enjoy Varenna, we loved it.

We did the same, but bought our tix to train back through Milan to Venice at the Travel agency right in town in Varenna. Our train frm Milan to Venice was delayed, and we went to the travel agency in the Centrale station in Milan and for only 3 euros switched to the next train to Venice. Varenna was wonderful. Eat at Cavatappi's if you can! Also easy ferry ride to bellagio.
One suggestion, if you are going at a nice time of year and flying into Malpensa,I'd take the bus to Como and the boat to Varenna. Much prettier than the bus to Centrale station and training up. We did that and got stuck for few hours bz. our orig. train was late.

As e_roz suggested, the ferry ride from Como to Varenna is beautiful. But rather than taking a bus from Malpensa to Como (as suggested by e_roz), take the train from Malpensa to Saronno and then a second train to Como. Saronno is a stop on the way to Milano Centrale. You'll have about a 10-minute wait and need to change platforms for the train to Como. Fare is 6.95 euros per person and trains run frequently.
When you leave for Venice, take the train from Varenna to Milano Centrale and then the train to Venice. This will give you a chance to see a bit of the "Lecco leg" of the lake.
