Travel from Assisi

We're new to Italy and need to know a few travel hints. What is the train service like from Assisi to Rome? Are there any other recommended train journeys from Assisi? We'll have a car and would appreciate some recommended visits. Thanks.

Yes, we'll be driving around Umbria but don't want to take a car into big cities due to traffic, parking etc. We also quite like trains for some trips so that we can all relax!! Thanks xxx

You could drive to Subiaco (St. Benedict's the very first Western Monastery) and/or Tivoli (Also look up Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este). They are outside of Rome.

In fact Subiaco is difficult to get to without a car. There was a single Dutch tour bus leaving when we arrived, but otherwise we had it almost to ourselves.

What time of year are you going? We went in March and there was snow alongside the road from Rome to Assisi.

Niqui - There's a good service between Assisi and Rome. Journey time is about 2 hrs, give or take ...

The best for a day trip would be the 07.04 Eurostar departure from Assisi (- arr. Rome 08.59) - which is DIRECT.

Later departures usually require a change of train at Foligno.

For details and return timetables see:

Hope this helps ...

Thanks Steve, that's really helpful. (Much quicker journey than I thought).
