travel by car in switzerland

I was wondering if its a good idea to travel by car in switzerland. If not the entire trip, I would like to atleast rent it for a day or two in BO or in Lucern. How are the driving conditions and parking facilities? Is it faster to travel by car than by train? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

We have always traveled by car in Switzerland and only encountered the usual problem of getting lost once in awhile! The roads are great and as long as you have a good map, you should have no problem. The streets are very narrow in the old part of Lucerne, so you have to have good directions. We stayed at the Des Balances and they have valet parking so we just unloaded our luggage and let them take the car away!

I would take trains in/between cities and in the Alps in winter.
Cars and Motorcycles are great in the Alps in "Summer" - see John Hermann's Motorcycle Journeys through the Alps now in the 3rd Ed. The very best guide for FR,CH,IT,AU and Bavarian Alpine driving/touring.

hkg--It probably is faster between cities by car than by train and, as bettyk said, good roads--just have a good map. There is a 30 franc sticker you must have in order to drive on the Autobahn (interstate, motorway--not sure what they're called in Switz.) We were told this by the Border Police when we came into Switzerland from Germany.

Well, I just saw the rental prices for a day in interlaken. The lowest is about 110 dollars! For a day!!
I think I might just stick with the train.

It is always more expensive to rent cars in Austria and Switzerland than in Germany because of the taxes so we fly in and out of Germany. And, it's almost always much MORE expensive to rent for just one day.
