Trastevere or Piazza Navona?

I am traveling to Rome in a few weeks and am booking my hotel. I am 37 and traveling with three friends. Can anyone recommend if we should stay in Piazza Navona area or Trastevere? We are only there for 3 days and are unsure if Trastevere is far from most of the typical attractions.
Thank you,
Shelley

Shelley,
we were in Rome in March, staying 2 min walk from Campo de Fiori, a great location. We visited both Trastevere and Piazza Navona and I'd choose Piazza Navona area as it's more central. You can always visit Trastevere one afternoon and stay for dinner.
Kay

There is a major difference to the feel of the two places. Trastevere is more of a neighborhood with locals enjoying them selves. Navona is a tourist spot. There are less god restaurants and more tourist traps in Navona. There are really nice spots scattered int he area of Navona, but there are many not worth your time at all. Trastevere is one of the nicest neighborhoods in all of Rome as far as I am concerned. It is very close to Campo di Fiore as well. There are a huge number of small restaurants and food shops. I personally would always stay in Trastevere.

As for location, Piazza Navona is more convienient for visiting the Vatican, the Parthenon and the Villa Borghese while Trastevere is closer to the Coloseo and Testacchio. Also, just across the Ponte Sixto from trastevere you can pick up the electric bus which makes getting to more distant sights very easy from Trastevere.

Vinny Testaverde is a quarterback and Mike Piazza is a catcher. Hope that helps.

Dean, could you recommend some places to stay in the Trastevere section? We always stay at the Due Torri near Piazza Navona, but I'm interested in Trastevere based on your description.

Thanks!

Did we miss something when we were in Trestavere?

I wasn't very impresssed and some of the areas we managed to stumble into appeared to be a bit run down to say the least.

US

Trastevere is the nicest neighborhood of Rome. I spent 3 days in May at Hotel San Francesco and it was great.
My room was nice and clean and breakfast wonderful.
Take a look at www.hotelsanfrancesco.net, all the pictures are realist.
Shelley, another vote for Trastevere and for Hotel San Francesco! I visited Rome for the third time last year, but first time to stay in Trastevere - I will never stay anywhere else! Especially wonderful in the evenings when the locals are eating outside in the small trattorias and restaurants!

And as Daniel said - yje San Fransesco is wonderful - centrally, without being on a noisy street, recently renovated, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful - and the breakfast to die for!

I envy you - enjoy Rome!

http://www.1001-villa-holidaylets.com/ is the URL for our favorite apartment in Roma. DO a search on Trastevere. The apartment in #1740

Its located on a small piazza above a restaurant, its not the most quiet place to stay but it is luxurious. The kitchen is well stocked and the bathroom is superb. Nice owners. right down the street is a great gelateria, caffe and restaurant

For a more 'neighborhood' experience, Trastevere. To be walking distance of many sites and in the historic center, Piazza Navona. I don't think you can go wrong in either neighborhood.

Stayed in Golden Tulip Ripa All Suites Hotel earlier in the year. cEUR 150 per night. Large rooms, great testaurant / bar in a quiet location on bus route but slightly away from the bustle of Trastevere. It's probably about the only hotel-style hotel in that part of town.

If you're only there for three days, I'd recommend the Piazza Navona area. We got in at noon, zonked out till 3:00, and were still able to see a lot of the sites just walking around that evening. We had supper in Trastevere one night (took a taxi from near the Forum after waiting for forever for a bus), and enjoyed it, but were really glad that we'd opted to stay near the Piazza Navona.
