I have bought a small bottle of wine in Europe. With the 3oz. rule, I assume I can't carry it on for my return flight. Bubble wrap seems in short supply in Serbia. If I wrap the bottle in 3 or 4 plastic bags and cushion with my clothing in the center of my luggage, would it be o.k.? It is sealed with a cork and has a plastic seal wrapped around the cork. Any other suggestions? I am flying from Serbia to London...there 3 days, then to Amsterdam and connecting home.

Several of my college students (all of legal age) brought wine home from Paris in March. They wrapped the bottles in dirty clothes in their checked bags (some of which were insubstantial duffels). Amazingly, all wine arrived unbroken--not sure how!

Here is how I have done it.

Wine in plastic bag, another plastic bag over the first one, drycleaing bag wrapped around bagged bottle. put the thing in the middle of suitcase with clothing around it.

Cross fingers and hope for the best.

Wine bottles are designed to be shipped and do quite well rolled in your (presumably by the time of your return) dirty clothes. I've never had a problem, and believe me, I've carried a lot of alcohol home from Europe, pretty much always in checked luggage.

I just saw recently what I thought was a very good suggestion for keeping wine bottles safe.

I don't know if you are from the US, but here we have little wrist floats that little kids wear for swimming. You can blow them up and put them on the kiddies arms to help them stay afloat.

These can wrap safely around a bottle of wine to cushion it in your bag.

I wrap wine bottles in newspaper layers and secure with rubberbands. Then I roll in my clothes and place in a center layer. Usually I can bring 2 or 3 bottles in my 26" checked wheeled luggage. My husband helps out with a couple more in his suitcase. We have done this for many years without any spillage.
