Transportation from Sorrento to Orvieto

We'll be staying in Sorrento and then we want to take the train which leaves at 10:27 am out of Naples Central to Orvieto. My question is how long does it take the local train to get from Sorrento to Naples Central, would it be faster to take the bus. We do not want to miss our train. Or, would it be easier to take the train to Rome from Sorrento, stay in Rome a couple of days and then take the train to Orvieto.

The train from Sorrento is a local commuter train--it takes an hour to Naples. You connect in Rome to Orvieto---see schedules at www.trenitalia.com

Thank you, looking at the train schedule some of the trains go directly to Orvieto. If we're staying in Montepulciano is Orvieto the best station to get off at and pick up a rental car.

Also, does anyone know how far FCO is from Orvieto?

Yes, it would be my choice because the pick up location is more convenient. The drive to FCO from Orvieto is close to 2 hours depending on time of day.

The train from Sorrento is a local commuter train that just goes to Naples. Keep in mind that the car rental in Orvieto will probably be closed in the afternoon (12:30 or 1 until 3:30 or 4).

Another town in which you could pick up a rental car is Chiusi. Maybe your arrival time there will work out better.

I don't understand, why would the car rental company be closed, that's scary. So, we get to Orvieto just to find out the rental place is closed.

Because many businesses close for 2-3 hours in the afternoon in Italy (and in other countries in Europe), not just car rental places. I know Hertz closes in Orvieto as I've rented from them at that location before. I'm sure Avis closes also. You can find a location (not all) open in the afternoon in major cities usually.

Here's Hertz Orvieto hours.
Railway Station
Address: Via 7 Martiri 32/F
Orvieto
Italy
Phone : 0763 301303
Hours of Operation: Mo-Fr 0830-1300 1500-1900, Sa 0830-1300, Su closed

Chuisi's Hertz hours are shorter:

Chiusi Scalo - Via M. Buonarroti
Address: Via M. Buonarroti 21
Chiusi(Chiusi Scalo)
Italy
Phone : 0578 22 30 00
Hours of Operation: Mo-Fr 0900-1230 1530-1900, Sa 0900-1230, Su closed

Toto, you're not in Kansas anymore. You're in Italy and you have to go with the flow. You might be better off picking up your car in Sorrento in the morning and just driving. Most places won't open before 8:30 or 9.
