A friend of mine and I will be backpacking through Spain for 2 weeks and I have a few questions about transportation. What is the best way to get from city to city? We will be starting in Madrid then heading off to Barcelona, to Valencia, to Malaga, to Gibraltar to Seville and then back to Madrid. Any tips? thanks!

Trains, at www.renfe.es.
If you did any bigger hops, you'd have to look at http://www.vueling.es, and in each city you can simply ask a travel agency about inter-city coach services that might stop in interesting places between those well-known cities - there is a lot to be experienced in smaller towns in Spain in addition to the big names that you mention, so let the schedules inspire you.

Thanks for the info. Looks like that airway has some cheap flights. You mentioned the train....but all my books advise against taking the train in Spain. Would you recommend the bus? thanks!

Wally has given you some good info - but the reason you haven't got more is because you titke is so vague. "Transportation" could be asking anything about anywhere in Europe.
So re-post w/ a better title that at least includes Spain - but adding the individual cities would be even better.
"<i>all my books advise against taking the train in Spain</i>" seems weird to me. The train is the best way to get to some place, but for others buses, or flying will be better.
