Transport to Windsor Castle

I'd like to visit Windsor castle (there will be three of us) but do not want to sign up for a bus tour. What public transport options do I have? Does the tube run there? How far is it from Kensington? How do you purchase entry tickets? Thanks in advance for any advice.

The tube does not go to Windsor. You take the train - could not be easier. And you buy tickets at the entrance gate of the Castle.

There are two railway lines from London to Windsor, both with trains every half hour. Both stations in Windsor are very close to the castle.
One line goes from Waterloo station (Bakerloo, Jubilee and Northern tube lines) via Vauxhall (Victoria Line tube), and Richmond (District Line tube), and the other goes from Paddington Station (Circle, District and Bakerloo Line tubes) via Ealing Broadway (District and Central Lines). On the line from Paddington and Ealing Broadway, you normally have to change trains at Slough. Look at a tube map to decide which is the easiest route from your starting point.

From her Maj's own website:

By train: To Windsor from London Waterloo or London Paddington. For train times call the National Rail Enquiries Service 08457 484950 (UK).

By coach: Green Line operates daily services from Victoria Coach Station, London.

It really is too bad that "Her Maj" doesn't take the train more often or she'd know that about the best way (IMO )to get there is train from Paddington to Slough (as mentioned above) and then via the very short connecting train into Windsor. You CANNOT get lost connecting at Slough since the
"Windsor Train" signs are prominently posted...and the connecting train's departure and arrival times are coordinated with the London connections.

You do not need an organized tour as ytou have already figured out.

We took the train from Paddington to Windsor in March - it was such a shock to get off the train and be looking straight at the castle! I had expected a short walk (and had worried about gettin lost ) but no need - you get dropped at the foot of the road to the entrance, maybe one minute from the entrance. Have fun!

Agree with Singletail. We just returned from Europe and stayed near Kensington. It's just a short tube ride to Paddington. You actually save a bit if you travel after 9:00. (seems like it was almost a pound less each to go to Windsor, through Slough)

As all have said - train - very easy. Go early as there will be a long line. There is an exhibit that tells much so you don't really need a tour. Have fun. The restaurant we went to (big one on corner) didn't serve full menu all day long and seemed baffled that we wanted lunch at 3:00.

The other big bonus to taking the short (25 minute) train ride from Paddington is that you can return on any train going back to Paddington that day, whereas with a tour you are at the mercy of the bus driver and must leave when they do. Your same-day train ticket will be open-ended for the return (as long as you return the same day). The trains leave quite frequently from Windsor.

You'll really enjoy this day!
