Transport from Rome Airport to Downtown

Hi,
My family (total 3) will be arriving in Rome at 22.30 in June. Would someone please give me suggestions on how we can get to our hotel (Hotel Smeraldo - Campo de Fiori) at this late hour? Train, bus, taxi, limo? Of course "cost" is a consideration. Thanks so much.

Hi Ben!
I'm a budget traveler, so I can relate to the cost issue!
From the airport (fiumicino I assume?) take the train into Rome's termini station (tickets are only about 5 bucks each)

From there I would take a cab since you will be arriving late at night (you definately DON'T want to try to navigate the subway at night when you are jet-lagged and burdoned with luggage!)

I found that taxis in Rome are fairly cheap, when I didn't walk somewhere more often than not I would take a cab, and I was on a tight budget and was still able to afford it. The most I paid was 40,000 lire (20 USD or so) and that was for a fairly lengthy ride during rush hour. Just make sure you have a map with you, and tell the driver that this is the 4th time you've been to Rome (that way they won't drive you around in circles...) Make sure to use only official cabs and that they start the meter when you get into the car.

I'm sure there are shuttle services, etc, but I didn't use them so I can't be of help in that regard (I would think it expensive since the airport is about 30 miles outside of Rome) Cab from airport-Rome was about 100USD (I looked into the cost but opted for train travel!)

Hope this has helped!

We got back from Rome a couple of weeks ago. Cab fare from our hotel near St. Peter's to the airport was about 40 euros, not $100! It took about half an hour.

Ben: We too used Andrea's limo service earlier this month. We had a late arrival and were charged 37 euro + 20% for late arrival. The train is a good option, but I'm not sure it runs at the time you are arriving, or that you would feel like using it at that late hour.

I don't think you can get a taxi any less expensive for three people and the extra charge for luggage. It's very comforting to see a gentleman waiting for you with your name on a poster, especially late at night after a long flight.

The e-mail address is:

[email protected]

j

Ben,
another option is the one we used, an airport-hotel shuttle mini-van. We also stayed at the Hotel Smeraldo and booked 2 tickets on the shuttle at the Hotel Reservation Desk once through customs & immigration. Cost was 10.50 euro each one-way. They dropped us at the door . I had the hotel name and address written down to show them, as my Italian is not that great. We used them on the way back as well. I don't know how late they run, though.
If you catch a cab from Termini (the main train station) to Hotel Smeraldo, it should cost about 10 euro, more at night and you pay per bag as well, extra. We did this twice, no dramas, about 10 min taxi ride. Walk out to the taxi rank outside and stand in line. Avoid anyone who approaches you asking if you want a cab.
(The area around the hotel is terrific, full of atmosphere. The market in Campo de Fiori is great. Hope you love it as much as we did.)
Kay

I am using Limoservicerome next week. Is it customary to tip the driver? If so, how much?

We were just in Rome a couple of weeks ago.

We used limoservicerome.com. Andrea does a great job.

Figure. The train is about 7-8 Euros each plus about 10 for the taxi. That's about 32 Euros for 3 people.

They charge 37 plus a small supplement for off-hours.

They're waiting for you when you arrive. They have a sign with your name. We also used them from the hotel to the airport. They were at our hotel 10 minutes early.

One more thing. We arrived at the train station from a side trip. Some people in front of us in the taxi line (about 15-25 minutes) took the train from the airport and they said (I cannot confirm this) that the train let's you off at a very inconvenient spot. I'm not sure what that means. Maybe someone else could address this.
