My husband and I have made this trek several times. We usually take the Eurostar train from Rome Termini station to Napoli. You can take the train to Napoli Centrale, and then take a very short cab ride to the marina. Then hop on the hydrofoil to Capri.
This is the best way to do it. You could also take a short flight from Rome to Napoli. However, the airport is quite far from the marina and taxis are expensive. Otherwise, the best thing to do is call your hotel in Capri - the concierge can arrange the transport for you.

If you want to get from Rome to Sorrento (15.00 pm) the Marozzi Bus service direct from Rome train station to Sorrento may be for you. 3-4 hour ride. Problem: website only in Italian http://www.marozzivt.it/web.aspx then last ferry from Sorrento to Capri at 19,25 see ferry website http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...capri-trip.cfm
