trains to pompeii
I will be traveling to naples and Pompeii from Rome. Can abyone tell me what trains I will need to get me there and back? I will be staying in Rome and would be spending one day in Pompeii--arrive early am and depart late evening.

You take a train from Rome's Terminus (train station) to Napoli (Naples in Italian). Get off at the Central Station and go down 1 or 2 floors in the station and get a "Circumvesuviana" train to Pompeii. They have a website that you could try to figure out a schedule from - http://www.vesuviana.it/rete_ferstazinvpdf.htm Good luck!

if you want to arrive early am then you will need to get a very early train.i took the 8:30 train (3hrs trip) for €17 to naples and then got a ticket on the circuvesuviana train(40min) for €4.you get this other train from a different station in naples,i had to ask to find it. the rome train was an hour late, which was in my favor as i had arrived an hour late myself.
pompei entrance was €10.i spent around 3 hrs there before i got tired and headed back.

Since this is a daytrip and time will be a factor, I wouldn't take the slow train that chevychasen suggests. Spend a few more Euro and book an ES train. The travel time is slightly less than 2 hours from Rome to Naples and the cost is about 22E for 2nd cl one way. The ticket for the Circumvesuviana commuter train between Naples/Pompeii Scavi will cost about 2-3E.
I wouldn't book roundtrip tickets for the Rome/Naples trip either. Buy your return ticket when you get back to Naples unless it is a major holiday or Sunday night. That way you can stay at Pompeii as long as you like without feeling rushed to catch a return train. The last ES train from Naples to Rome is about 11 pm. There are also other trains such as the D, E, IC that are frequent but take a little longer.
