Trains to Germany/Austria
I am wanting to travel (3 adults and 4 children ages 6,6,9,12) on 12/12 from Frankfurt to Munich (via Nuremberg-stop for a couple of hours) on 12/15 Munich-Salzburg and 12/17 Salzburg-Austria. Does it matter if I purchase my tickets now or at the station? Do I qualify for any discounts that I should be looking for?

No.

You - not. But the children will travel free if accompanied by a paying adult.
You might consider buying a single ticket from Frankfurt to Kahl and a Bavaria Ticket from there. The Bavaria Ticket costs 25 Eur for up to 5 people (I think if the children are yours, there is no limit) in all local trains in entire Bavaria for one whole day. Obviously you can't use the high-speed trains (ICE, IC/EC) but you save a lot of money doing so.
(For details, look up the Bavaria Ticket or Bayern Ticket in the search function - it was mentioned very often on this forum)

Technically it is possible to make the journey with regional trains.
In fact there is a regional train from Nürmberg to Munich that leaves Nürmberg
at 13:10 and arrives in Munich almost 2 hours later.
The trip would be longer and several changes of trains would be required.
BUT, it can be done if saving quite a bit of money is a point of major emphasis.

Bob,
actually, the 13:10 Regional Express is one of a series of REs (service starts 12/20/06) that will leave Nürnberg every two hours at 10 minutes past and use the new high speed ICE line from Nürnberg to Ingolstadt. These are direct trains (no changes) and, other than the ICEs, will be the fastest service between Nürnberg and Munich. Because of the route they take, there are no stops at Regensburg or Landshut.

jbeanut,
you should explain the relationship between the four children and the three adults. It could make a big difference.
Children between 6 and less than 15 travel free with a parent or grandparent, not just any adult. And, I think the parent has to be traveling on a full fare ticket, not a Land Ticket. Any child, 6-14, pays half price without a parent or grandparent.
The €25 Bayern Ticket is valid for up to 5 people of any age OR parents or grandparents along with all of their own children or grandchildren under 15. Those offers cannot be combined, i.e., five adults plus all of the children of all of the adults.
So, if two of the adults are the parents of all the children, they could travel together on a Bayern Ticket. The third adult would need a standard ticket. Or, all three adults and any two children could travel on a Bayern Ticket, and the remaining two children would have to have children's tickets for half price.
There is also something called a Group Saving fare of 50% off for a group of six or more. I'm not sure if you have to have some kind of a card to qualify, or if you can just go to the window as a group, but for most routes, the Bayern Ticket will save more money.

That is good to know about the trains between Nürmberg and Munich. I was thinking of visiting Nürmberg from Munich next year.
When I looked at the DB site, I just looked at the schedule for the next day. I should have checked several weeks ahead.
If the trains are RE types, does the Bayern card apply to that route?

Ops, typo. Service on the direct RE from Nürnberg to Munich starts next Sunday, December 10.
You can purchase the Bayern Ticket from any red/white/blue DB automat. They can be made to display in English. There should be one in the Frankfurt airport regional station (underground, across the street from Terminal 1).
The Bayern Ticket (€25, but might go up on Dec 10) will cover your travel all day until 3 AM the following morning, so you should have plenty of time to stop in Nürnberg.
Full adult fare from the airport to Kahl via the Frankfurt Hbf will be €6,60 by the time you get there, but there should be a group day ticket (Gruppentageskarte) - up to 5 people for €22, plus two children's fares of €3,95 each. I don't think there is a surcharge for buying these tickets at the counter (there is, €2, for the Bayern Ticket), so ask about the Gruppentageskarte.

>the Bayern Ticket is valid on all regional Express trains within Bavaria.
Let's keep our fingers crossed. I would expect the Bayern Ticket to be valid on that line, but it is a pretty special train, so they could make it an exception. On the other hand, the Bahn website does show the Schönes-Wochenende Ticket as valid for next Sunday, so it is a very good indication that the Bayern Ticket will also be valid. We should know for sure at 6 PM Saturday (EST), when the new schedule/fares become effective.
By the way, the Nürnberg-Munich ICE has been qualifying for the Herbst-Spezial (Fall special) fare of €29 each way. This special has offered non-refundable online fares as low as €29 on ICE/IC/EC between any two German stations, even when the first and last travel was by regional trains. The Herbst-Spezial offer ends Saturday, but I see it will be replaced on the Nürnberg-Munich route by a €19 "frei-Spezial" fare. I'm not sure where all the frei-Spezial fare will be offered; I see it on the Frankfurt-Munich route for €39, but it is not shown for Berlin to Munich. Well, we can all find out on the Bahn website (probably only in German) on Saturday evening.

It really all depends on how much time you are willing to spend on the trip and how much money you want to spend.
First, there is no senior discount in Germany (except on the Bahn card, and you probably don't want to do that).
You can spend €58 for a standard express train fare from Nürnberg to Munich (ICE) to Salzburg (IC/EC). That trip takes just over 3 hours using the new high speed line from Nürnberg to Munich.
If you don't mind a few more hours and want to save some money, you can buy a Bayern Ticket Single for €18 from an automat in Nürnberg (an extra €2) from a ticket counter. The regional connection from Nürnberg to Salzburg, again using the high speed line from to Munich, takes about 4:38 - an hour and a half longer, but you save €40.
The regional connection has about a 50 minute stop in Munich, so you can have a sandwich and a cup of coffee if you want to.

I think I have discovered the "secret" of the Bahn-frei Spezial fare that I noticed between Frankfurt Hbf and Munich (€39) and between Nürnberg and Munich (€19).
It appears that these fares are being offered, on these to connections only, from Dec 10 to Dec 17. It is some sort of an introductory offer for the new high speed service between Nürnberg and Munich. The ICE from Frankfurt Hbf to Munich will also follow the new line from Nürnberg.
