Frankfurt Munich Fuessen
Hi,
My husband and I are traveling to Germany this July/August and I was wondering how the Bayern Ticket would work from Frankfurt/Main to Fuessen. Regular train costs about 150 Euro for two.
From Fuessen we'd then be going to Salzburg and then Salzburg to Munich (and fly back to the US from there)
Thank you for any suggestions on how to bo about this.

Buy local transit tickets from Frankfurt to Kahl, which is on the Bavarian border, and use a Bayern ticket to Munich and Füssen from there. Buy your Bayern ticket in advance. It should be available from a DB ticket machine in Frankfurt, or you may just want to get one in advance before leaving; you may not be able to purchase one from a conductor on your way to Munich before hitting Kahl, and you certainly don't want to get off the train in Kahl just to buy one from a ticket machine (you CAN get one in Hanau if you happen to be changing trains there anyway.)
Check schedules at www.bahn.de - stipulate local transport only when searching your itin (Bayern ticket rules.) It could be a very long train ride with several changes if you use that Bayern ticket.

I see a snag here.
Remember, the Bayern-ticket is only valid on regional trains and below, and doesn't take effect until 9:00 weekdays.
Using Kahl (Main) as the origin and 9:00 as departure time, I don't see any trains from Kahl to either München or Füssen that <u>don't</u> have at least one leg on an ICE/IC/EC and arrive before about 16:00.
If you can spend nights in München and Salzburg, then no problem - just buy another ticket each day, and plan around that 9:00 departure each day.
Or - do your excursion on a weekend/holiday, when the Bayern-Ticket is valid from midnight.

the Bayern-Ticket would certainly work, and you could save a lot of money for a few hours extra time.
There is a connection that leaves Frankfurt am Main at 8:34, goes through Kahl at just after 9 AM (so you can use a Bayern-Ticket), and gets into Füssen at 15:57. That is a travel time of 7h23m, 2 hours more than the fastest trains, but it would only cost €40,20 for two people, almost €120 less than the fastest trains.
And, there is nothing magical about 16:00. There are other connections that leave later, get in later, and are just as good.
But, I agree with Robespierre, unless you have seen Munich too many times, there is no reason to go all the way to Fuessen. Stop for a few days in Munich and see Fuessen as a side trip.

Who said there was anything magical about 16:00? I merely pointed out that that was the <i>earliest</i> one could reach Füssen using the Bayern.
But Füssen isn't a bad place to overnight, and I think I would rather take the trip that arrives an hour later, has the fewest changes (3), and no bus leg.

Thank you so much for your suggestions. I found out that if we leave on a weekend we could get a Schoenes Wochenende Ticket for 30 Euros that takes us from Frankfurt to Fuessen, of course on slower Trains. We were going to Muenchen at the End of our trip. We booked a Bio-Hotel near Fuessen for R&R, then we're off to Salzburg/Wolfgangsee and last 5 nights in Munich.
