Trains-Helsinki to St. Petersburg & St. Pete to Moscow

I need to take a train from Helsinki to St. Petersburg mid October and then from St. Petersburg to Moscow. Where can I find rates, times, and how do I book tickets before I go? I found one site with the Helsinki time but no rates. Thank you. Lisa

For the Helsinki-Moscow train, try this site

http://www.vr.fi/heo/english/ita/ita.htm

(which has rates and schedules). You could call them at +358 307 20 902, or ask your hotel in Helsinki to get them for you.

Most of the trains from St. Petersburg to Moscow leave 11 pm-midnight, and arrive seven hours later. The first-class fare (two to a compartment) starts at about $45/one way. Easiest way is to get your agent or the hotel to buy the tickets (for which they will charge a fee). I really recommend getting these in advance as particular trains do often sell out.

Thank you. I found the timetable from Helsinki to St. Petersburg, but cannot get a rate. It must be less than the $45.00 to Moscow from St. Petersburg. I will be in Helsinki for only a day. Is that time enough to get a ticket or shall I try to book one before I leave the states? Appreciate your help.

Call the train service in Helsinki (the rates used to be on the web site, and now they ask you to call). As I mentioned before, you might want to get the tickets in advance to avoid disappointment--the trains do often sell out.

I emailed the Finnish train company and arranged to buy the tickets using a credit card. They then delivered the tickets to the train for a small fee. It worked very well.
