Train Venice to CT - Book ahead??

Hi All,

My fiance and I will be travelling from Venice to Cinque Terre (Monterosso) on August 29th, and are trying to decide if we should book our train ticket ahead. I see there are a couple route options, I lean towards the 2 leg route via Milan, and know that we can buy the regional train ticket at the station. As for the high speed train from Venice to Milan - must we book ahead?

Lastly, if we wanted to see Verona would it be doable to take a regional train from Venice to Verona, stop for lunch, then continue on to CT? Or would that significantly increase travel time and complicate matters?

Thanks!

You don't have to book in advance, but you will probably be able to get discounts Venice/Milan and Milan/Genoa (if Milan/Genoa isn't a regional train). No need to buy regional as there are no discounts, no reserved seating and they have more restrictions bought online.

You could book a regional train (about 2 - 2 1/2 hours) or a fast AV (Freccia) train (about 1 - 1 1/2 hours) to Verona from Venice. You would have to store your luggage at the train station and sometimes there can be a line. Be sure you leave time to retrieve it if you advance purchase tickets Verona/Milan.

I booked this leg for our trip next month (doing this leg early october). We booked the one early AM through Milan and the cost was 18 Euros each, one way . Booking in advance saved some money.

Thanks Ky! So, if I'm not concerned about saving the extra money we can wait to decide on including Verona and buy our tickets for all legs at the station?

If you don't care about saving money then you can wait. You can't save money on regional trains anyway as they don't have discounts. If you decided a day or two before while you are in Venice, you can just pop into any shop with the Trenitalia logo in the window and buy your tickets or drop by the train station. You might still snag some discounts.

The only problem would be a fast train being full and you would have to take the next one. If you want to be somewhere by a certain time (or have to be), then you could book the fast trains a day or two ahead.
