In general I stayed in lesser hotels on my trip as I traveled on a lower budget, but I wanted some luxury and relaxation at the end of my trip and landed a quite good deal through booking.com for LeMeridien Bristol, maybe one of the most historical hotels in Warsaw (this and Polonia...). It is a Starwood hotel with an old world feeling and you can't bit the location on Krakowskie Przedmiescie street- Exactly next to President's Palace and only 7 minutes walk to Castle Square and historical center on one direction, 10 minutes walk to Nowy Swiat and commercial shopping/dinning/business area the other direction. Bus to the airport stops exactly opposite the hotel too. You may want to look further into this option.

Here's the Polish Rail website link. There is a drop down with the schedules and ticket prices. We've taken them before and the ones we took were nice, comfortable and clean.

Polish Rail Official website ( which has timetables etc ) http://www.pkp.pl/
Trains in general are faster then cars / buses ... example Warsaw - Torun by train is less then 3 hours by car minimum 4hours and if driven according to speed limits be about 5hours.
In Summer you maybe getting extra traffic, so again train be quicker. Recommending 1st class since those in many cases are by seat reservation so you have a guarantee of having a seat.

The problem with the Polish trains is they are not high-speed rail lines and they tend to be older designs (other than the Warsaw-Krakow line). You won't be hitting TGV/ICE/shinkansen speeds. That said, they're faster than buses.
In Krakow, check out the Crazy Guides for their commie-era tours. And go see the Arka Pana, you have time with six nights in Krakow.
Too bad you're getting as close as Torun without hitting Gdansk and Malbork.

Krakow is one of my favorite cities in the world. We love Krakow and especially when we stay in Old Town. We had a wonderful room the last time we were there.
BigRuss is right about the Polish Trains being slow. They are also noisy. We love Poland and we love to go there, but we also love to rent a car. We spent a miserable night going from Krakow to Venice as every time we got to sleep the train would stop and either people would be laughing and talking or the brakes screeching would awaken us. However, we once went by train from Prague to Krakow during the day and it was wonderful. In fact, we all expressed regret that the trip was over. There were only about six or eight people in our car and we had a great time, almost a party. I remember one was an engineering professor at the local college and a colleague of his and we all got to talking about world events and everyone was from a different country. It was really fun, but we won't go again at night.
