Florence Venice 10 euro regional more for fast train>
yup that is about one euro an hour - because there are few if nay direct regional trains between Florence and Venice so you may have to change a lot and have downtown between changes. I looked at schedules once and it literally took all day on regional trains Florence to Venice - yet on fastest trains it is about 2.5 hours or so - do you want to spend all day on a dumpy uncomfortable (many I've been on have metal seats!)?

Thanks guys!!! I'm definitely going to try to take advantage of the mini passes. I don't have a ton of time so would like to get to my destination as fast as possible but will certainly look into local trains for short trips.
Thanks again everyone for all of the great advice!

Sorry if this is a duplication as I've hurriedly skipped through. Hub and I usually bought our tickets for the next trip when we arrived at each town-we were both equally anal about having tickets in hand. But the only time we really needed to purchase ahead of time was during holidays. Kids getting out of school for Easter was crowded.
Hope to hear about your trip.

Regional trains are fine for short trips, like Florence to Pisa or Lucca, where they are about the only option but please do not take regional trains between say Rome and Florence or Florence and Venice as you will take hours longer to do so and please totally IGNORE the following posted above as it is pure misinformation - NO trains exist at the prices given below - NONE - why this poster keeps posting this misinformation after being constantly corrected by not only moi but several others is beyond belief. - There are NO trains nearly as cheap as the following from the previous above posterer:
Misinformation and a disservice to any planning an Italian train trip -
<just hop regional trains when I get there 2-4 euros
per hour of trainig for your route which I did parts of in May
Rome Orvieto 4 euro from small machines locals use
Orvieto Florence 4.5 euro for me in May
Florence Venice 10 euro regional more for fast train>
Again there are NO trains nearly this cheap - pure misinformation!

"Val d'Orcia region (likely renting car)"
There's really no other way to see the Val d'Orcia region in a couple of days except by car. You don't have time to fiddle with bus schedules. Keep in mind it will be dark before 5:00 pm, so your days will be very short unless you're comfortable finding your way in the dark.
I recognize you're trying to strike a balance, but I think the Val d'Orcia could be pretty dreary in late Nov./early Dec., especially in poor weather. What towns did you hope to visit? Where would you base?
