train travel in Europe
Hello
We will have 7 nights to spend travelling from Paris to Zurich airport. Is it feasible to travel from Paris to Provence, then to Alsace region, then Lucerne and Zurich in this time frame, and actually have time to see anything. All of us would like to see Provence area and some Alsace, mainly because it seems more straightforward to the direction we are heading toward. Is trying to combine both regions worth it ? or should we settle on just one, I don't want to back track. We will not be driving.
Thank you for your thoughts.

You will be back tracking if you go from Paris to Zurich via Provence. Check a map and you'll see that Provence is not near Zurich. At a quick glance, without checking mileage or train schedules, Zurich is about half way to Provence.
IMHO the above schedule - Paris, Provence, Alsace, Lucern, Zurich is way too much for 7 days.
What time of year are you going? That might depend on your choice of Provence or Alsace. Also train schedules between the regions and Zurich would be another factor. So check train schedules and decide which area (based on ease of getting to Zurich) would give you more time to explore.

You can find out yourself what time constraints you are up to by train by using:

Yup way too much, even by car. Leave out Alscae and it would be possible - train Paris to Avignon area, the heart of tourist Provence - then head to Geneva and trains to Lucerne and or Zurich.
But trains in that area are wonderful - for tons on using trains, etc. i always point out these super info-packed sources: www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com. You are not traveling enough to even think about a railpass in case, like many novice train trip planners you automatically think of that. Though i guess possible the France-Switzerland railpass could possibly make sense if you really do all you hope to.

OK hypothetical possible
Day 1 TGV Paris to Avignon
2,3,4 in Provence around Avignon - rent car or use local transports
Day 5 - train to Geneva and go onto Montreux, lovely town on Lake Geneva (or nearby Vevey, which many really love)
Day 6 - Hop the Golden Pass scenic train from Montreux to Spiez, transfer for train to Lucerne
Day 7 Lucerne
Day 8 onto Zurich
Very very easily done IMO and a really sweet itinerary IMO

no matter what you do in France, Provence or Alsace you can go via Geneva and take the Golden Pass to Lucerne from Montreux and experience one of Switzerland's ballyhooed scenic trains. You can even try to nab a VIP seat where you are perched right next to the driver and pretend you are driving the train as well.
