IT WORKED! Thanks Ira. I was able to get 2 tickets from Rome To Venice for the 39 Euro/person Promotional Fare! A savigs of over $70 from the RailEurope price. I wish I had known about this Forum weeks ago, as I was able to resolve my issue in under 24 hours. Thanks. L

1) If they offer both the "ticketless" or “self service” option, which is better to take?
2) If using the ticketless option, do you get your email receipt validated before boarding train?
2) If self-service, you use your email receipt to get ticket at the station, correct?
Then, do you validate that ticket before boarding?

Oops, one more question. I just looked at the registration page on Trenitalia. It is not secure. Ok to register anyway? (It asks for full name, email address, and user ID.)

your reply to luli38 was very helpful. Specifically your directions on how to book a train ticket on trenitalia online. I had no idea I could purchase a Eurostar ticket from Rome to Venice 1st class for 28 euro. Great info!
My husband and I are going to Italy in June. My husband and I will land in Rome on Friday, June 30, at 9:30 AM in the Fiumicino airport. We will continue on to Venice from there. I believe we have to take a train to the Termini station in Rome to catch a train to Venice. My question is, how much time do we need to land, transfer to the Termini train station and then catch a train to Venice? There is a ES leaving at 12:55 PM. Is 3 hour 25 minutes enough time to get baggage, go throuhg customs, travel to the Termini in Rome and transfer to a train bound for Venice?
In case you are wondering, we made arrangements to fly to Italy via Rome, then leave Italy via Milan 30 days later. We used frequent flyer miles and received the super saver rate. We had to change our plans for good reasons. If we changed our flight to land in Venice we would have had to use more frequent flyer miles and have a 6 hour layover in Frankfurt. In addition we would have had to pay an additional $100 per ticket. We opted to take a train to Venice rather than change the tickets. At this point changing the tickets is not an option. Your info on cheaper ES train tickets was a bonus!

did you try the €29 Eurostar option first? Those tickets sometimes sell out earlier, but there might have been some left.
BTW, I just tried for the In Eurostar tickets for May 17, less than 48 hours from now. The €29 tickets were sold, but there were some €39 tickets left. I only tried for the 10:55 ES*. There might have been €29 tickets for other ES*. Just mentioned this because it is a good indication that you can probably buy tickets 3 days in advance.
There is also a €15 Freedom to Travel fare on the ICs to Venice.

Marie, I just booked my tickets on the web (thanks to Ira and steve with last minute station assistance) and when you get to the credit card section it shows a secure connection at that point. Also, yes, book ticketless and then print out the email confirmation you receive. THAT IS ALL. Show that, the PNR (reservation) code to the conductor on the train and they look it up. For the ES trains you need NO validation for ticketless OR self service booths. Because my ticket is a combination of R and ES train (s) I will be brining my email for the ES leg and first printing out at self service booth the R part of the journey. I think I still need to get that validated though - read somewhere that some of those had changed but I think it IC ones.

It's quite a walk from where you are dropped to the track for your Rome/Venice connection. If you have extra time, just sit in the station and have some lunch.

If you are concerned, you can open an account at yahoo or hotmail and use that to register.

Since the schedule for Rome/Venice is so poor, I suggest that you buy seats on the 12:55.
If it is after 12:00 when you clear customs at FCO, you can change your tickets to the next available train for the cost of a reservation at the FCO train station.

Yes, you have to validate your R train ticket. This is because it is an "open" ticket.
The ES* tickets are good for only the one seat on the one train and needn't be validated.

OK, it's my turn to ask Ira a few questions!! Ira, I will be arriving in Rome FCO at 7:30 AM on the morning of June 10th (if there are no delays) with my husband and daughter. We need to take a train directly to Florence, which I have not booked yet. 2 questions: should we take a train to the station or a taxi (which is easier?), and should I buy my train tickets to Florence ahead of time? (3rd question, if so, how much time should I allow). Thank you in advance for your help!!!

Thanks to Ira, kybourbon and rkkwan, I was nervous about reserving a train ticket. I thought I would lose out if I missed the train due to some kind of delays. Thanks Ira for easing my worries. I never would have looked for the 29 or 39 euro tickets without your advice
I am having difficulty getting a password for trenitalia. I have seen others who have had the same difficulty. I will get a yahoo or hotmail account and use it to get the reservations.
